Its primary organs are the lungs, which carry out this exchange of gases as we breathe. The human body needs oxygen to sustain itself. After only about five minutes without oxygen, brain cells begin dying, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, which can lead to brain damage and ultimately death. Our lungs s upply ox y gen from the outs ide air to the c ells v ia the blood and c ardiov asc ular s ys tem to enable us to obtain energy. As we breathe in, ox y gen enters the lungs and diffus es into the blood. It is tak en to the heart and pumped into the c ells. At the s ame time, the c arbon diox ide was te from the break down of s ugars in the c ells of the body diffus es into the blood and then diffus es from the blood into the lungs and is ex pelled as we breathe out. One gas (ox y gen) is exc hanged for another (c arbon diox ide).
