Up until two hundred years ago, most people like you and I could not read or write. The church was designed to tell a story. Firstly, it faced East, so this would remind them that Jesus was crucified in Jerusalem, but equally, as the sun rises in the morning and would shine through the stained glass windows, that he was resurrected. The Altar The Altar is a wooden or stone table. The Altar is used for the service called the Holy Communion. A Church may have more than one Altar, but the main one is always at the front of the Church. The Altar will have a cross on it. A Bible on a stand, and collection plates. Some Altar’s also have flowers, candles and incense on. The symbolism of the Altar and it location in the church: This is the area where God is and it’s a holy and special place. The Pulpit The Pulpit is a raised platform that the priest would stand on when reading from the Bible or reading out sermons. What would this symbolise? Why have the priest raised on a high platform? The Pulpit can be found at the front of the church between the nave and the chancel. The priest will speak to the people from this stand. The lectern The Lectern is special book stand. What book? The Bible rests on the back of an eagle with its wings spread, perched on top of a globe. What does this symbolise? This symbolises God’s word being preached around the world. That the eagle would fly around the world and spread the teachings in the Bible. The lectern can be located opposite the pulpit. The Font The Font is used to Christen (baptise) babies. It is a traditional for the baby to have God Parents. A boy will have 2 God Fathers and 1 God Mother. A girl will have 2 God Mothers and 1 God Father, the God Parents are responsible for the spiritual upbringing. Members of the family will be present as well as friends.
