S Tradition The whole process by which the Church preserves and hands on the faith through generations. Natural Law R Experience Sacred Scripture God’s own special revelation through the writings of the Prophets, and the early Christian communities.  Sacred Scripture and Tradition The interplay between Scripture and Tradition in shaping Christian morality is often referred to as the "Sacred Deposit of Faith". This is the body of revealed truth, entrusted by Christ to the Apostles and, through them, to the entire Church. Christian Moral Life Has to be oriented to both Jesus the Christ and the Gospel that Jesus preaches at God’s command, and which is handed on to the whole Church. Discipleship therefore involves every follower in a group that is more than a collection gathered for a common purpose. Discipleship is a real community that likewise has to find and continually test the truth of its formative identity in fidelity both to Jesus and the Gospel message. We believe that the Bible comes from God. However, when we apply the Bible to our moral discernment and actions, we need to take special care that we have a proper understanding of what is meant by referring to the Bible as the revealed word of God. The Bible as a Source of Morality We do NOT count the Bible as revelation because we believe somehow God dictated its contents word for word to various authors. We hold the Bible as sacred because of what it reveals to us about who God is.  The Bible as a Source of Morality We have answered this in ways like “God is Love.” But one traditional answer drove the question deeper: Deus semper maior – God is always more. This is very important in Christian Morality. To live in conformity to the image of God we must practice on-going discernment of God’s Spirit to make sure that we are responding as best as we can to the one and true God, and not worshipping some false image of God. The Bible as a Source of Morality As Christians, we believe that God’s highest and definitive revelation is NOT found in the Bible as a sacred text, but rather in the PERSON of Jesus Christ. Jesus and not the Biblical Text has the final authority as the ultimate norming norm. Jesus is Norma Normans Non Normata (the norm with no norm over it) of our lives. Methodology Refers not first and foremost to a given biblical text per se, but rather points to God’s definitive revelation to humankind of God’s own self, namely Jesus Christ. In short, the text's actual meaning is anchored on the very image of God. Methodology Looks more explicitly at the text to illumine more clearly the core. Scripture is a text that is neither self-evident, self-translating, self- interpreting, nor self-applying. Only after Scripture is translated, read, analyzed, understood, and interpreted can it be applied. In short, how does this scriptural text speak to me in my current condition? Methodology We have to ask whether our biblical interpretation of a particular passage or theme ultimately coheres with a theologically sound image of God as revealed in Jesus Christ. In short, does it reflect my understanding of Jesus Christ? One way to test if we are properly interpreting a passage of scripture is to judge the interpretation by its fruits. Ask the following questions: Does my interpretation of this passage lead to acts that reflect the merciful and compassionate love of Christ? Does it help me imitate Christ more authentically? Does my interpretation of this passage lead to my growth as a person loved by God? Does my interpretation of this passage lead to love of my neighbor in the way of Christ? Does my interpretation of this passage lead to greater communion and less division in God’s family? If the answer to these questions is “Yes” then you are interpreting the passage properly, If the answer is “No” or you have doubts, then you need change your interpretation and do some research or consult an expert. Synthesis THE TERM “MORALITY” DOES NOT OCCUR AS SUCH IN THE BIBLE. THEREFORE, WE HAVE TO LOOK MORE TO THE BIBLE MORE OF AN OVERALL MORAL VISION THAN TO A SET OF ETHICAL PROSCRIPTIONS FOR WHICH TO GUIDE AND CONFORM OUR LIVES. IT IS NOT A PARTICULAR SET OF SCRIPTURAL VERSES THAT EXERCISES A SACRED CLAIM ON US. BUT ONLY INSOFAR AS THAT BIBLICAL CLAIM CORRESPONDS TO AN OVERALL VISION OF GOD AND GOD DEFINITIVE REVELATION IN JESUS CHRIST. THEOLOGY: CHRISTIAN MORALITY Activity: “Manny Pacquiao posts Bible verse that states gay people should be killed” The class will be divided into 7 or 8 groups. Each group will have a Magis circle sharing about the given topic. Following the pastoral circle method, each group will answer the following questions: What is happening in the situation? Why is it happening? What does it mean in the light of faith? What should we do about it?
