General Chemistry 1 SPSTEM5 13th Century Dominican Blessing May God the Father bless us. a mouth to preach the word of May God the Son heal us. salvation with, May God the Holy Spirit and the angel of peace to watch enlighten us, over us and lead us at last, and give us eyes to see with, by our Lord's gift, to the ears to hear with, hands to do Kingdom. the work of God with, Amen. feet to walk with, MISSION Colegio de San Juan de Letran, a Catholic and Dominican Institution, with a special devotion to Mary, commits itself to evangelization through education towards the integral formation of the human person, in the noble tradition of excellence, according to the ideal of Deus, Patria, Letran. VISION In 2030, we envision Colegio de San Juan de Letran Manila as an educational institution that is: empowered by INNOVATION committed to SUSTAINABILITY and driven to INTERNATIONALIZATION. General Chemistry 1 SPSTEM5 6 DISCUSSION ❏ Chemistry Laboratory ❏ Proper Dress Code (PPE) ❏ Lab Safety ❏ Guidelines in using SCIENCE LABORATORIES 7 CHEM LAB 8 LAB DISPENSING AREA 9 Proper Dress and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) LAB SAFETY 10 CLOTHING 11 GUIDELINES IN USING THE SCIENCE LABORATORIES 12 13 LAB SAFETY REMINDER 14 EMERGENCY RESPONSE ❑ Know the location of the fire extinguisher, eye wash, and safety shower in the laboratory and know how to use them. 15 16 REPLACEMENT OF BROKEN APPARATUS/ EQUIPMENT 17 REPLACEMENT OF BROKEN EQUIPMENTS ❑ The student must accomplish the LABORATORY BREAKAGE SLIP and submit to the Laboratory Custodian. ❑ The broken apparatus/equipment will be replaced with the same brand/kind not later than 30 days after the incident. 18 REPLACEMENT OF BROKEN EQUIPMENTS ❑ The student who broke the apparatus/equipment is liable for the replacement of the broken apparatus/equipment. ❑ The broken apparatus/equipment must be replaced with the same brand/kind. 19 IN RESERVING AND USING THE LABORATORIES 20 IN RESERVING AND USING LABORATORIES ❑ Experiments to be done in the laboratory must be noted and approved by the STEM Coordinator, Science Teacher coordinated with the Laboratory Custodian. 21 IN RESERVING AND USING ❑ LABORATORIES For students who need to borrow, he/she must first seek permission or inform the laboratory custodian. Reservation forms and other related forms are available at the laboratory custodian office. 22 IN RESERVING AND USING LABORATORIES ❑ All apparatus, equipment, and/or tools to be used must be requested and carefully taken from the laboratory custodian office. ❑ Immediately after the Lab activities, any borrowed apparatus, equipment, and/or tools must be returned after class. 23 Les s o n 1 Labaratory Apparatus General Chemistry 1 Beakers ❑Beakers are used for holding various chemicals. ❑Not for measuring precisely. ❑Sizes vary. Graduated Cylinder ❑Used to precisely measure the volume of liquids or run experiments. ❑Read from the meniscus at eye level. ❑Sizes vary. Erlenmeyer Flask ❑Used to approximately measure the volume various liquids. ❑Useful for mixing by swirling ❑Sizes vary. Florence Flask ❑Used to boil liquids. ❑Also used to collect gases, if applicable. ❑Sizes vary. Volumetric Flask ❑Used to prepare standard solutions. ❑Used for dilution ❑They are only good for 1 specific volume. ❑Comes in many sizes Reagent Bottle ❑Used to store, transport, or view reagents such as acids or bases. Rubber Stoppers ❑Used to close flasks and test tubes. ❑The holes allow the insertion of glass tubing, probes, or thermometers as needed by the experiment. Test Tubes and Rack ❑Used to hold chemicals/tubes while experimenting. ❑Not for measuring precisely. ❑Aim away from faces. ❑Sizes vary. ❑Label tubes. Buret Buret and Buret Clamp ❑ Used for precisely measuring dispensed liquids Double buret clamp ❑ Holds buret to ring stand. Single buret clamp Ring Stand and Ring Clamps ❑ Base/Pole of set-up for experimentation. ❑ Holds glassware in place for heating or evaporating. Test Tube Brushes ❑ Cleaning. ❑ You must clean tubes before and after you use. Test Tube Holder ❑Used for carrying or holding hot test tubes. Thermometer ❑Measuring temperature. Hot Plate ❑Used to heat substances. Bunsen Burner ❑Used to heat substances quickly or if > 400oC is needed. Rubber Tubing ❑ Used for a variety of things. ❑ Example: ❑ Connecting Bunsen burner to gas valve stem. ❑ Connecting glass tubing together. Wire Mesh or Gauze ❑Used to absorb and spread the heat of flame. ❑Keeps glassware from cracking and breaking. ❑Part of ring stand set-up. Clay Triangle ❑Used to hold a crucible in place on a ring stand. ❑Also helps absorb and spread heat of flame. ❑Part of ring stand set-up. Crucible and Cover ❑Used for heating substances. ❑Can withstand high direct heat. Crucible Tongs ❑Used to carry crucible. Beaker Tongs ❑Used to carry beakers. Mortar and Pestle ❑Used to grind substances into powder or slurry. Scoopula/spatula ❑Used to scoop chemical powders. ❑Not a measuring instrument. Stirring Rods ❑Used to stir substances. Watch Glass ❑Used to evaporate liquids and cover beakers during sample preparation. ❑It is also used to hold solids during weighing. Evaporating Dish ❑Used to evaporate excess liquids. Centrifuge ❑Used to separate suspensions (solids from liquids). Funnel ❑Used to safely transfer substances from one container to another. Dropper and Bottle ❑Used to measure out small amounts of liquids for experiments. Wash Bottle ❑Usually contains deionized water. ❑Handy for rinsing glassware and for dispensing small amounts of dH2O for chemical reactions. Digital Balance ❑Used to accurately measure mass. ❑Only up to 200g in our labs. Triple Beam Balance ❑Measures the mass of an object. ❑Make certain the balance is calibrated correctly before use. Double Pan Balance ❑Used to compare the masses of two substances. Centigram Balance ❑Used to precisely measure the mass of a substance. ❑More precise than the triple beam balance. Pipet, Pump, and Bulb ❑Used to precisely measure the volume of liquids in small amounts.
