The human brain What does our brain look like? Why do we have wrinkled brains? Like paper intelligence Typically, conditions like lissencephaly (smooth brain) result in impairment, but not always. The parts of the brain Gyrus: each ridge in surface of the brain. Sulcus: groove or space between two gyri. Fissure: large groove or space between two gyri. Cortex: outer surface of brain. How have we studied different parts of the brain? What about the 10% of our brain? What is localization? Different parts responsible for different finctions Phineas Gage Broca’s area How did we study the brain before neuroimaging? 1970’s -antidepressants Functions of the Four lobes Frontal lobe: Prefrontal cortex: complex thought, planning, organization Personality and intelligence Phineas gage 25 Most complex aspect of brain. What makes a persona a person Motor cortex: movement damage Homunculus Size? What happens with injury? Functions of the Four lobes Parietal lobe: Somatosensory cortex: responsible for feeling Neglect: where a person ignores objects to the opposite side of the body Functions of the Four lobes Temporal lobe: Auditory cortex: responsible for hearing Wernicke's area: understanding and generating speech Intelligence?
