ENZYMES Definition of Enzymes Enzyme Function Classification of Enzymes Mechanisms of Enzyme Action Factors that Affect Rate of Enzyme Activity NAME OF PROFESSOR LEARNING OUTCOMES 1.Describe the structure and functions of enzymes. 2.Explain the basic principles of naming enzymes. 3.Differentiate chemical properties of several types of enzymes. 4.Explain the factors that affect enzymatic activity. ACTIVATION ENERGY Activation energy is the minimum energy required to kickstart a chemical reaction. Catalysts lower down activation energy. ENZYMES Biological catalysts (they are not consumed/used up in a chemical reaction) Essential in many different biological processes Mostly proteins Highly specific in function; optimal at body temperature (37°C) and at physiological pH (7) Suffix “-ase” TYPES/CLASSIFICATIONS TYPES/CLASSIFICATIONS MECHANISM OF ENZYME ACTION BASIC MECHANISM - binding of the substrate with the active site of the enzyme ACTIVE SITE - specific area that combines with the substrate. FACTORS THAT AFFECT ENZYME ACTIVITY TEMPERATURE FACTORS THAT AFFECT ENZYME ACTIVITY pH FACTORS THAT AFFECT ENZYME ACTIVITY Enzyme Concentration FACTORS THAT AFFECT ENZYME ACTIVITY Substrate Concentration
