What Changes Do Materials Undergo? LESSON # 3 PRAYER Dear God, the God of love. As we gather here today, we invite Your presence into this classroom. Lord, bless each and every student here, as well as our teacher, as we embark on another day of learning. Please give us clear minds and open hearts so we can grasp the knowledge and lessons set before us. Help us to be attentive, and let Your wisdom guide us in our studies. We ask for Your peace to fill this room, so that even in the midst of challenges, we may feel Your comforting presence. In Jesus’ name, we pray, AMEN. WORK PLAN Chemical Vs. 01 Word Detect 02 Physical Change 03 Brown Out! 04 Seatwork #2 LEARNING TARGET I can differentiate chemical and physical changes that happen to a material. 01 WORD DETECT Physical Vs. Chemical Directions: Write four differences between physical and chemical changes in matter using the Venn diagram. Then write their similarities in the overlapping space at the middle. Browse the lesson for your answers. PHYSICA CHEMICAL L Guide Questions: 1. What could have happened to the pot or vase? 2. Can the pot or vase return to its original shape? Why or why not? 3. Is the pot or vase still useful? 4. Is there a way for the pot or vase to become new again? 02 CHEMICAL VS PHYSICAL CHANGE CHEMICAL CHANGE involves chemical reactions which cause new substances or products to be formed substances now have properties that are different from when they were in their original form PHYSICAL CHANGE observable changes in the appearance or property of an object without the object changing into a new substance most changes can be reversed What are the examples of chemical change? BURNING CHEMICAL CHANGE chemical reaction that requires fuel, oxygen, source of heat to set fire EXAMPLES : burning wood cooking burning paper N CHEMICAL CHANGE chemical process in which material chemically combines with oxygen N CHEMICAL CHANGE This occurs when fruits and vegetables are cut and exposed to air. RUSTING CHEMICAL CHANGE caused by chemical reaction between the metal and the moisture in the air DRYING LEAVES CHEMICAL CHANGE absence of water and nutrients causes oxidation to take place, which produces the color change in leaves What are the examples of physical change? MELTING PHYSICAL CHANGE process wherein solid turns into liquid FREEZING OR SOLIDIFICATIO N PHYSICAL CHANGE process wherein liquid turns into solid VAPORIZATION PHYSICAL CHANGE process wherein liquids turns into gas CONDENSATIO N PHYSICAL CHANGE process wherein gas turns into liquid SUBLIMATION PHYSICAL CHANGE process wherein solid turns directly into gas DEPOSITION PHYSICAL CHANGE process wherein gas turns directly into solid 03 BROWN OUT! How’s your experiment? Why did we soak slices of apple into different liquids? This is to slow down the process of oxidation or browning of the apple. Which liquid caused the least amount of browning? The lemons. It contains Vitamin C that react with the oxygen before the oxygen reacts with the the apple. Which liquid caused the least amount of browning? Vitamin C will prevent the apple from browning until all the acid is used up. Vinegar does not have ascorbic acid, and therefore it did not work. LEARNING TARGET I can differentiate chemical and physical changes that happen to a material. 0 4 SEATWORK Answer How Much Do I Know A on pages 34-35 SEATWOR K Answer “How Much Do I Know” A only on pp 34-35.
