Title: Physical and chemical change Do now: Essential routines ★ Equipment out on desk ★ Title and date in book on the top line of a new page (or line under last lessons work) ★ Be ready and on the DO NOW task. On the next slide I am going to show you a list of Reversible and Irreversible changes. Which ones are which? Using a fire extinguisher Baking a cake Driving a car Burning wood (combusting fuel) Boiling Water Bomb Fireworks Glowsticks Handwarmers Dissolving salt Melting ice cubes Mixing cooking ingredients Materials can change in different ways. Melting is an example of a physical change. Burning is an example of a chemical change. Chemical changes are harder to undo. Often chemical changes cause a change in colour. ⦿ You are going to do a practical to investigate chemical and physical changes. ⦿ You are going to heat two substances and make observations of what you can see and hear. ⦿ You need to write your observations on the sheet and sketch the equipment you used. What we are looking for and thinking about…. ⦿ Do you think ⦿ Was heating the heating the ice copper carbonate a was a chemical or chemical or physical change? physical change? Reversible or irreversible? What we are looking for and thinking about…. ⦿Do you think heating the ⦿ Was heating the copper carbonate ice was a chemical or a chemical or physical change? physical change? ⦿ It was a chemical change because we saw a colour change. ⦿ It was a physical change because it is reversible. ⦿ This reaction is irreversible. Can you complete these 4 tasks to show your understanding? Task 1 Word fill Task 2 Example Task 3 Observations Task 4 Using diagrams New materials formed that are different to the starting materials Cannot easily be undone. Can easily be undone.
