MAP- READING Tools of the Geographer LESSON OBJECTIVES 1. Identify the different types of maps. 2. Explain what is shown on the different types of maps; 3. Identify the features of a map. TYPES OF MAPS Physical/Relief Maps: These maps show the physical features of an area such as mountains, rivers and valleys. Political Maps: These maps show the boundaries of countries, parishes, counties or states. They also show capitals, towns and cities. Population Maps: These maps show where people live in a particular region or country. The density of the population may be shown by dots or shading. Choropleth maps are used to show population density. Dot maps are used to show population distribution. TYPES OF MAPS Climate Maps: These maps show the rainfall and temperature of a country. Colors are used to show different climate or rainfall zones. Topographic Maps: These maps shows elevation or height with the use of contour lines and/or shading. They also show different information such as landforms and coastal features. GeologicalMaps: These maps show types of rocks in a region as well as fault line. WHICH TYPE OF MAP AM I?
