WEEK 2 OVERVIEW OF SOME TYPICAL PHYSICAL CHANGES OF AGING BY DECADE OVER THE LIFE-SPAN Age Changes 20’s Increase in weight begins; lower metabolism Visual acuity decline Decrease in max amount of air we can breathe into lungs Mid-20s: Testosterone levels start to decline gradually Late 20s: Cartilage deterioration in joints 30’s Start of muscle decrease Late 30s: Loss of bone mass (women 2x as fast as men) Visual acuity continues to decline Sperm production begins to GRADUALLY decline 40’s Eye structure changes begin Hearing loss (especially high pitch) Visual acuity continues to decline Perimenopause begins (usually in Mid-40’s) Menopause for some 50’s Menopause (average age = 51) Decrease in height begins Loss of bone mass accelerates Retinal changes Visual acuity continues to decline Prostate changes (enlargement, stiffening) Continued hearing loss Skin may start to get thinner and dryer 60’s Start losing weight Decline in smell/odor detection Decline in ability of the heart to contract Continued hearing loss Decline in balance abilities Accelerated hair loss/growth/greying of hair 70's Bone loss slows 50% can’t hear high pitches by now 80's Strength endurance decrease By this time, significant (40%) decrease in max amount of air we can breathe
