DH 314 - Dental Morphology Fall 2024 Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face and Neck Regions Chapter 1 Fehrenbach & Popowics DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Why do we need to know this? & Neck Because you’re going to become a dental professional. Dental professionals must be familiar with the surface anatomy of the face and neck because their features provide essential landmarks for many deeper anatomic structures. Examination of these features give information about the health of deeper tissue. While variations are normal (to a certain degree), a change may signal something clinically significant and must be noted in the patient’s record and correctly followed up. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Anatomic Position & Neck The illustrations of the face and neck and any structures associated with them are oriented to show the head in anatomic position. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Anatomic Position & Neck The illustrations of the face and neck and any structures associated with them are oriented to show the head in anatomic position. This is the same position as if the patient is viewed straight on while sitting upright in the dental chair. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Regions Orbital Region The orbital region of the face includes the eyeball and all its supporting structures, which are contained in the orbit (the bony eye socket) of the skull. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Regions Nasal Region The nasal region of the face includes the external nose. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Regions Infraorbital Region The infraorbital region of the face is located inferior to the orbital region and lateral to the nasal region. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Zygomatic Regions Region The zygomatic region, located farther laterally, overlies the bony support for the cheek – the zygomatic arch. The zygomatic arch extends from just below the lateral margin of the eye toward the middle part of the external ear. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Buccal Regions Region The buccal region of the face is composed of the soft tissue of the cheek. The cheek forms the side of the face and is a broad area of the face between the nose, mouth, and ear. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Regions Oral Region The oral region of the face has many structures within it, such as the lips and the oral cavity. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Face Regions Mental Region The major feature of the mental region of the face is the chin. The bone underlying the mental region is the mandible. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Clinical Vertical Dimension of the Face Considerations The face can be divided vertically into thirds and this perspective is considered the vertical dimension of the face. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Clinical Vertical Dimension of the Face Considerations Vertical dimension allows a comparison of the 3 divisions of the face for functional and esthetic purposes using the Golden Proportions, a set of guidelines. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Clinical Vertical Dimension of the Face Considerations Loss of height in the lower third, which contains the teeth and jaws, can occur in certain circumstances causing pronounced changes in the functions and orofacial structures. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Neck Regions of the Neck Regions The regions of the neck extend from the skull and lower jaw down to the clavicles and sternum. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Neck Sternocleidomastoid Regions Muscle The large strap muscle is easily palpated on each side of the neck of a patient, with its borders dividing the neck into further regions. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Neck Hyoid Regions Bone At the anterior midline is the hyoid bone, which is suspended in the neck. Many muscles attach to the hyoid bone, which controls the position of the base of the tongue. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Neck Thyroid Regions Cartilage Also found anterior to the midline and inferior to the hyoid bone, the thyroid cartilage is the prominence of the larynx, the “voice box”. The vocal cords as ligaments of the larynx are attached to the posterior surface of the thyroid cartilage. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Neck Regions Thyroid Gland An endocrine gland, it can be palpated on a patient within the midline cervical area. It is located inferior to the thyroid cartilage at the junction of the larynx and the trachea. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Parathyroid Neck Glands Regions Also endocrine glands, they are located close to or within the posterior aspect of each side of the thyroid gland but cannot be palpated in a patient. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Submandibular and Neck Regions Sublingual Salivary Glands In contrast to the parathyroid gland, each of these glands can be palpated in a patient. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Neck Lymph Nodes Regions Lymph nodes are located in certain areas of the neck and, when palpated on a patient, should be noted in the patient’s record. DH 314 Property of Amanda de la Vega, RDH, MS Neck Lymph Nodes Regions Lymph nodes are located in certain areas of the neck and, when palpated on a patient, should be noted in the patient’s record.
