GLOBAL HEALTH SITUATION HEALTH OF INFANTS AND SMALL CHILDREN About 50% of deaths among children under 5 are associated with malnutrition. At least two million a year of the under- five deaths could be prevented by existing vaccines. Most of the rest are preventable by other means. GLOBAL HEALTH SITUATION HEALTH OF OLDER CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS HIV “the biggest hazards to children at the 21st Century” “In 1997, 590 000 children age under 15 became infected with HIV” Potentially deadly "rites of passage" as violence, delinquency, drugs, alcohol, motor accidents and sexual hazards such as HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Those growing up in poor urban areas are more likely to be most at risk.” GLOBAL HEALTH SITUATION HEALTH OF ADULTS Developing countries “Infectious diseases will still dominate” As the economies of these countries grow, non-communicable diseases will become more prevalent due to the large adoption of “western” lifestyle and accompanying risk factor- smoking, high-fat diet, obesity and lack of exercise.” GLOBAL HEALTH SITUATION HEALTH OF ADULTS Developed countries “non-communicable diseases will remain dominant. Heart disease and stroke have declined as causes of death in recent decades, while death rates from some cancers have risen.” Cancer will remain one of the leading causes of death worldwide. GLOBAL HEALTH SITUATION HEALTH OF OLDER PEOPLE Cancer and heart disease are more related to the 70-75 age group than any other; people over 75 become more prone to impairments of hearing, vision, mobility and mental function. Over 80% of circulatory disease deaths occur in people over 65. Worldwide, circulatory disease is the leading cause of death and disability in people over 65 years. NATIONAL DOH| DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH DOH| DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH “a national health policy- maker and regulatory institution.” DOH| DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH Mission To lead the country in the development of a productive, resilient, equitable and people-centered health system Vision Filipinos are among the healthiest people in Southeast Asia by 2022, and Asia by 2040 Roles in the (1) leadership in health; (2) enabler and capacity builder; Health and (3) administrator of specific services Sector Mandate To develop national plans, technical standards, and guidelines on health NATIONAL HEALTH SITUATION POPULATION Annual average population growth 2010-2015 2015-2020 2020-2025 rate (%) 1.73 1.59 1.41 Projected 2020 2025 2030 population 125,337,50 TOTAL 109,947,900 117,959,400 0 NATIONAL HEALTH SITUATION NATALITY CURRENT POPULATION OF THE PHILIPPINES NATIONAL HEALTH SITUATION NATALITY NATIONAL HEALTH SITUATION MORTALITY (MAY 2022- JULY 2023) NATIONAL HEALTH SITUATION MORTALITY “In the Philippines, more than five people die for every one thousand population in 2013. This is equivalent to 531,280 registered deaths from all causes and all ages. Of these deaths, 57 percent or 304,516 were males and 43 percent or 226,764 were females. ” NATIONAL HEALTH SITUATION NOTIFIABLE DISEASES TODAY’S HEALTH SITUATION GLOBAL As of Jan 01, 2024| A Global Shortage of Health Care Workers As the first and often only link to essential health services for millions, frontline health workers provide lifesaving care and treatment, especially in remote, rural, and conflict zones. But we’re facing a major crisis. At least 55 countries do not have enough doctors and nurses to meet the World Health Organization (WHO)’s minimum staff ratios, which severely compromises health care quality and patient safety. The health workers we do have are often undertrained, underequipped, and underpaid — if they’re paid at all. While the situation is improving in many countries, at the current rate, there will be a global shortage of 10 million health workers in 2030, which will disproportionately affect low- and lower-middle income countries. Meanwhile, we are deeply concerned about the attacks we’ve seen on health workers and health facilities in places like Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan. The Tragic Impacts of Conflict on Mental Health Mental health has become a vital topic of discussion and implementation for the global health community, recognized as an integral part of health and well-being that impacts us psychologically, emotionally, socially, and physically. In Gaza and West Bank, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine and other countries, we are witnessing the psychological consequences and distress of chronic war and mass displacement. We have also witnessed natural and man-made disasters, epidemics, pandemics and more humanitarian crises, all of which have long-term impacts on health and mental health outcomes. As a global community, we are moving in a positive direction in making mental health a core element of humanitarian and developmental health-based approaches, but there is more to be done. A Global Maternal and Neonatal Health Emergency As a global community, we are not on track to meet the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs) for maternal health. Globally, maternal mortality rates are stagnating, with some countries, including the U.S., seeing increases. The most vulnerable women and girls are those in fragile, remote, and poverty-stricken contexts. Although in general, maternal deaths are not predictable, the majority are preventable. And when a mother dies, her newborn is much less likely to survive the pregnancy; those that do are more likely to die in infancy. Even her older children face an increased risk of death. In addition to the risk of death, disrespectful and poor-quality maternity care is ubiquitous, particularly in low resource settings. Much of this poor care stems from weak health systems that lack an adequate number of skilled health workers and have shortages of equipment and supplies. TODAY’S HEALTH SITUATION NATIONAL DOH says COVID-19 cases ‘mild, manageable’ despite uptick The Department of Health (DOH) said on Wednesday that COVID-19 cases in the Philippines remain “mild and manageable” despite a recent rise in infections. The Philippines reported an average of only 202 COVID-19 cases daily for the week of May 14 to 20. The DOH said this was a substantial decrease compared to the start of 2024, which saw an average of around 500 cases a day. The figure was also significantly lower than the average of around 1,750 daily cases logged in mid-May 2023. Philippines detects 2 more mpox cases in Metro Manila The Philippines has detected 2 more mpox cases in Metro Manila, both of whom tested positive for MPXV Clade II or the milder form of mpox virus. The Department of Health said Mpox case 11 is a 37-year-old male from the National Capital Region who noticed symptoms starting August 20, 2024. “A distinct rash began on his face, arms, legs, thorax, palms, and soles. Initial investigation showed that case 11 had no known exposure to any person with similar symptoms, but admitted to close, intimate, and skin-to-skin contact within 21 days before the start of his symptoms,” it said. The new Mpox patient was admitted to a government hospital last August 22, from where a skin sample was taken and then tested at the DOH Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM). The patient remains admitted in a government hospital. Leptospirosis must be addressed aggressively MANILA – House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo 1st District Rep. Janette Garin on Monday said the sudden surge of leptospirosis cases after massive floods in Metro Manila was due to lack of doxycycline, an antibiotic commonly used to prevent this bacterial infection. Garin, a former secretary of the Department of Health (DOH), said it is the recurring lapses or failure of the DOH to deliver doxycycline in the provinces before Typhoon Carina and enhanced southwest monsoon hit Luzon. "Ang problema, may pondo naman para sa libreng doxycycline subalit ang availability on the grounds ay mahirap (The problem, there is fund for free doxycycline but [its] availability on the grounds is difficult),” she said in a news release.
