The Philosophical self By Marco R. Rivere, Rpm, CHRA The greatest of minds have contemplated such questions since the dawn of man. Now you still ask it yourself Started as early as the Greek ages Continued through the middle ages, pre-modern age, post-modernism period Philos - Love Sophos - wisdom “self” as one of the focus of these great thinkers “an unexamined life is not worth living” rely on rational thought and... “introspection” - thorough examination of self to understand it Socratic method Self is the soul reality consist of physical and ideal happiness = vitue + introspection Founder of the “Academy” Soul as “knower”, “thinker”, and “determiner” of actions Soul is made up of reason, physical appetite, and spirit/passion The three components are in a dynamic and even conflicting relationship Reason balances the components knowledge before experience Founded “Lyceum” Considered first to write explanation for behavior of man Soul has three functions: Vegitative, appetitive, and rational the rational is located in the heart; brain is a gland that performs basic function behavior is subject to rules and laws or how they exist or evolve four concepts: material cause, formal cause, efficient cause, final cause (allows for understanding self) Concept of potency and act Pagan parents but became Christian Greek + Christian thinking Introspection fan Detach from worldly things. God is the way to true knowledge Introspection = truth Soul = memory, intelligence(understanding), and will Self seeks to be united with God father of modern philosophy dualism: mind + body interaction mind is spiritual and body is physical reflex theory: animal spirits animal spirits - gas that move very quickly Tabula rasa - blank slate experience man descartes hater Mind is passive: does only experiencing and sensing introspection = thinking mind is collection of different perception unified by processes/relationships -experience and senses self is the body impression/sensation and ideas there is no self (no experience/sensation of self) rational will: sticking to your principles faculty: mental capacity against john locke: can get knowledge through senses Rationality: think beyond what we can sense. ability to reason "solved" the mind body dichotomy denied the idea of internal self self is a term to categorize of one's behavior I act therefore I am mind=person mind-body dichotomy is an invalid problem mind and body are intertwined dismissed cartesian dualism Eliminative Materialism - mind=brain=self no brain = no self mind does not actually exist because it cannot be sensed
