## Health, medicine and disease ### What do living things need? - All living things need: - Water - Food - Air - Suitable temperature - A suitable place to live ### Why do living things need food? - Food provides each living thing with **energy**. - Energy is needed for: - Breathing - Eating - Growing - Moving - Having offspring - Animals- get their energy from the food they eat. - Plants get their energy from the **sun**, they make their own food using sunlight. ### Where do animals get their energy? - Animals eat **food** to get energy. - Animals have different **diets**: - **Herbivores** only eat plants. - **Carnivores** only eat other animals. - **Omnivores** eat both plants and animals. ### What is energy used for? - Different foods have different amounts of **energy** stored in them. - **Energy** is measured in **joules** or **kilojoules.** - The amount of energy needed depends on how **active** you are. - **Energy** is needed for all life processes: - **Breathing** - **Eating** - **Growing** - **Moving** - **Having offspring** ### Keep your heart healthy - The **heart** is a muscle. - The **heart** pumps **blood** around the body. - You can feel your **heartbeat** by placing your hand on your upper left-hand side of your chest. - Your **heartbeat** changes if you move about. ### Exercise Investigation - When we exercise, our heart rate and breathing increase. - This is because our muscles need more **oxygen** to stay alive. - The heart beats faster to pump the **oxygen** around the body. ### Can you trust your results? - It is important to repeat experiments to check the results. - This makes the results more **reliable** and **trustworthy.** ### Illness and disease - Living things can get **ill** and develop **diseases**. - **Illnesses** have **symptoms.** - **Symptoms** are signs that help us identify what is wrong with a living thing. ### How can medicines help us? - **Medicines** are drugs that help us get better if we are ill. - **Medicines** affect the body. ### Infectious or not? - An **infectious disease** spreads from one person to another. - **Infectious diseases** can be spread by: - Coughing - Sneezing - Sharing food or drinks - Touching an infected person. - Not all illnesses are **infectious**. ### Plant infectious diseases - Plants can get **infectious diseases.** - **Infectious plant diseases** spread easily from plant to plant. - **Animals** can get **ill** from eating infected plants. ### How else can we stay well? - **Vaccinations** help our bodies fight off diseases. - **Vaccinations** involve injecting weakened or dead germs into the body. ### What have you learnt about health, medicine and disease? - **Health, medicine and disease** can be studied by: - Asking questions - Conducting investigations - Recording results - Drawing conclusions
