Unit 5, Lesson 1 • Jesus, the Messiah 61 NAVI G AT E • U N IT 5 , L E S S O N 2 Read & Observe | Study Passage: John 4:1–54 | Memory Passage: John 4:41–42 BACKGROUND STUDY Culture: Importance of Water Wells Read your study passage and mark the keyword well/fountain/spring. • The climate in Israel is such that, in biblical times, a nearby well or a spring of water was a necessity for survival. During the rainy season, water would flow down through the permeable limestone and collect in an underground aquifer. This water could then be accessed by digging a well deep enough to reach the water table. Sometimes, a well was dug near a spring which ensured a continuous supply of water. Troughs for watering animals were often constructed of wood or stone next to a well in order to sustain herds of livestock. The most common method of drawing the water up out of a well was using a rope tied to a bucket or a waterskin. To prevent animals and people from falling in, wells often had a low wall around the opening, and some had covers over the top for extra protection. Because the construction of a well was such a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, possessing a well was a sign of wealth and independence. The valuable resource could sometimes cause strife between two parties who disagreed over ownership (Gen. 26:18–21). Typically, women were the ones who drew water for household needs. The communal wells in most towns and villages served as social gathering spots where the women came at the customary times for their water. As long as a well provided water, people drew from it regularly and often. Ropes used to draw up heavy buckets full of water often wore grooves into the stone on the inside edge of the opening of the well. Complete the following word studies and learn about the two different words used for “well” in John chapter 4. well (John 4:6) Strong’s #: G4077 Greek word: pēgē Strong’s Definition: a fount (literally or figuratively), i.e. source or supply (of water, blood, enjoyment) (not necessarily the original spring) well (John 4:11) Strong’s #: G5421 Greek word: phrear Strong’s Definition: a hole in the ground (dug for obtaining or holding water or other purposes), i.e. a cistern or well; figuratively, an abyss (as a prison) Read the following cross-references and write the name of the well referenced. • Genesis 16:14 Beer-lahai-roi/Beer Lahai Roi/Beerlahairoi • Genesis 21:27–33 Beersheba • Genesis 26:22 Rehoboth • 2 Samuel 23:15 Well of Bethlehem/Well near the gate of Bethlehem • John 4:5–6 Jacob’s Well Go to page 70 and follow the instructions to complete the map work. 62 Jesus, the Messiah • Unit 5, Lesson 2 EXP LOR E • U N I T 5 , L E S S O N 2 Read & Observe | Study Passage: John 4:1–54 | Memory Passage: Acts 18:27–28 Jesus told the Samaritan woman that if she knew the gift of God and who He was, she would have asked Him for a drink. Reread your study passage and mark the keywords gift, living water, and testified/testimony. 1. Why did the Samaritan woman think that Jesus could not give her this living water? AWV. She said He had nothing to draw with and that the well was deep. 2. The woman asked Jesus if He was greater than whom? Our father Jacob The Samaritans were half Jewish and half Gentile. Their history included pagan worship practices. Therefore, the Jewish people typically did not look upon them favorably. Most Jews would not have spoken to any Samaritan, much less to a Samaritan woman. Complete the word study to learn more about the gift Jesus was offering her. gift (John 4:10) Strong’s #: G1431 Greek word: dōrea According to Vine’s Expository Dictionary: denotes “a free gift,” stressing its gratuitous character; it is always used in the NT of a spiritual or supernatural gift. 3. Read John 7:37–39 and answer the following questions to learn more about this incredible gift. a. Who do these verses say the living water is? The Spirit b. Who is to receive the gift of living water? AWV. Those who thirst, come to Him, and believe. c. When was this gift going to be given? AWV. After Jesus had been glorified 4. Use the Believe cipher to discover the important difference between what Jesus offered and what the woman wanted. The woman came to the well to meet her p h y s i c a l need. Jesus offered her living water to meet her s p i r i t u a l need. 5. Why did the people of Samaria say they believed in Jesus? We have heard for ourselves/ heard him ourselves/we ourselves have heard Him Write your theme for Unit 5. Unit 5, Lesson 2 • Jesus, the Messiah 63 NAVI G AT E • U N IT 5 , L E S S O N 3 Interpret | Study Passage: John 4:1–54 | Memory Passage: John 4:41–42 Read your study passage and mark the keywords worship, spirit, and truth. When the Samaritan woman perceived Jesus to be a prophet, she asked Him about the correct place to worship God. Jesus told her that soon it would not be either at “this mountain” (Mount Gerizim) or in Jerusalem. 1. Write the name of the people group that corresponds to what Jesus said about their worship. a. They worshiped what they did not know: The Samaritans b. They worshiped what they knew: The Jews 2. How are true worshipers going to worship the Father? In spirit/the Spirit and truth/in truth 3. Why must we worship in spirit and truth? God is spirit/a Spirit/Spirit. John MacArthur defined true worship as “any and every expression of obedience, praise, honor, adoration, and gratitude offered to the true God by a regenerate soul who knows the truth about God and loves Him.”1 worship (John 4:20) Strong’s #: G4352 Greek word: proskyneō Strong’s Definition: to fawn or crouch to, i.e. (literally or figuratively) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore) 4. Complete the matching activity. e Worship by the Spirit, boasting in Christ and not the flesh. d Worship by presenting your body a living and holy sacrifice which is your reasonable service of worship. b Worship by singing the Lord’s praises and giving thanks for His salvation. a Worship by loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength/might. a. Deuteronomy 6:5 b. Isaiah 12:2–5 c. Matthew 4:8–10 d. Romans 12:1 e. Philippians 3:3 f. Hebrews 13:15–16 c Worship by serving the Lord and Him only. f Worship by continually offering a sacrifice of praise and by doing good and sharing with others. Scripture records numerous rebukes from the Lord to His people about their false worship. While they honored God with their lips, their hearts were far away from Him (Matt. 15:8–9). True worship requires a correct heart attitude as you approach the holy God. In order to worship in truth, you must have a correct knowledge of whom it is you are worshiping. You are to be commended for your diligent study of God’s word which will produce in you a heart of true worship as you come to a greater knowledge of Him. Your heavenly Father is seeking true worshipers who will worship Him in spirit and truth. 64 Jesus, the Messiah • Unit 5, Lesson 3 EXP LOR E • U N I T 5 , L E S S O N 3 Interpret | Study Passage: John 4:1–54 | Memory Passage: Acts 18:27–28 WHO IS JESUS CHRIST? The spiritual needs of the Samaritans were more important than His physical comfort. 5. What are some reasons you may have avoided sharing your faith with others? AWV. Fear, rejection, ridicule, insecurity, a lack of biblical knowledge, etc. The Samaritan woman simply told others what she knew about Jesus. As believers in Christ, we have the greatest privilege to be able to share with those around us who He is and what He has done. While not everyone will accept the truth, we can confidently proclaim the good news, knowing that it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes. Ask the Lord for opportunities and boldness to share what you are learning in the Believe study. F. White We all can unwittingly get songs stuck in our heads. Therefore, it is easy to see why hymns are such a valuable vehicle for teaching fundamental doctrines of the church—from incarnation to salvation and creation to eschatology. Sound theology guards the church from heresy, which in turn will anchor our souls on the Solid Rock, Christ Jesus, who is the Messiah. • Read each of the “Holy Spirit of Messiah” stanzas and match its theology with the correct passage, using the highlighted words as clues. b Holy Spirit of Messiah, you we praise and you we love. Benjamin Franklin White, the youngest of twelve children, was born in 1800 to Robert and Mildred White of Cross Keys, South Carolina. When Ben’s mother died during the severe winter of 1807, he went to live with his brother and sister-in-law, Robert Jr. and Polly, where he was active in the local Baptist church. Even though B. F. White had limited education because he worked in the fields, he was fascinated by music and mastered every music book available to him. Mr. White married Thurza Golightly in 1825, and the couple had nine children during their fifty-three years of marriage. In 1842, they moved to Georgia where White studied music, established singing schools, and wrote and collected tunes with the desire to one day publish a songbook. B. F. White (1800–1879) Finally, in 1844, the manuscript for The Sacred Harp, a shape-note songbook, was published, and White’s reputation and influence increased in the music world. He established the first permanent singing convention in Georgia, taught shape-note of the “fasola” syllables, became editor of the Harris County newspaper, The Organ, and guided The Sacred Harp through four editions, all while staying true to his faith. When B. F. White knew his death was imminent in 1879, he summed up his life with these words, “The end has come, and I am ready.”2 Unit 5, Lesson 4 • Jesus, the Messiah 67 NAVI G AT E • U N IT 5 , L E S S O N 5 Review | Study Passage: John 4:1–54 | Memory Passage: John 4:41–42 Answer the questions or fill in the blanks.
