The crisis that began as a counterattack by the Myanmar government against Rohingya militants who had attacked several police bases on August 25, turned into a full scale 'ethnic cleansing,' according to the UNHCR, as the army and local Buddhists firebombed, raped and murdered across Rakhine state, the predominantly Muslim western region of Myanmar. Kevin Carter South African photojournalist Born in Johannesburg, South Africa He died at 33 Documented the famine in Sudan Member of fearless conflict photojournalists called the Bang Bang Club Kevin Carter “The Vulture and the Little Girl or The Struggling Girl Appeared on The New York Times March 26, 1993 It is a photograph of a little girl suffering from starvation in Sudan. She is crawling toward a United Nations- sponsored feeding center. First published in the New York Times featuring the deadly famine in Sudan with a news article titled ‘Sudan is Described as Trying to Placate the West” Sudan was experiencing famine due to the civil war between the Muslim-Arab North and Christian South happening in the 1990s. Kevin Carter “The Vulture and the Little Girl or The Struggling Girl Appeared on The New York Times March 26, 1993 According to the New York Times (2009), hundreds of their subscribers called or wrote to the editors as they were curious about the fate of the little girl, asking why Carter did not help her instead of taking her picture. Kevin Carter “The Vulture and the Little Girl or The CRITICISMS (Geurts, 2015) Struggling Girl Appeared on The New York Times The photographer was criticized for March 26, 1993 taking this photo. The New York Times received messages asking for details about the girl. What did the photographer do after taking the photo? Did he help the kid? “To them the photograph no longer depicted the miserable fate of a young child in need of help, but testified against Kevin Carter’s decision to shoot, rather than aid the victim” The photo says nothing about the article and the political situation in Sudan. Kevin Carter “The Vulture and the Little Girl or The Struggling Girl Appeared on The New York Times March 26, 1993 New York Times (1994) Editor’s Note: ‘The photographer reports that she recovered enough to resume her trek after the vulture was chased away. It is not known whether she reached the center. Kevin Carter “The Vulture and the Little Girl or The Struggling Girl It won a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Appeared on The New York Times Photography in 1994. However, negative March 26, 1993 reactions overwhelmed positive reactions due to criticisms about the photographer. Carter admitted that he intended not to disturb the bird, positioned himself in the best way possible to take a good image, and waited for twenty minutes for the vulture to show its wings. He chased the vulture away after failing to capture its wings and witnessed the girl as she resumed her struggle. (Geurts, 2015) Kevin Carter “The Vulture and the Little Girl or The Struggling Girl One week after he received his award, he Appeared on The New York Times claimed his own life in 1994. Because of March 26, 1993 this, the meaning of his photo changed again. His negative fame might have influenced him to claim his own life as he “always carried around the horror of the work he did.” Until now, the identity and fate of the woman are unknown.
