UNIT 1 LESSON 1 Jesus Calls the Apostles and Commissioning Vocation o Latin Words: Vocare (to call/ to be called) ▪ According to the dictionary: strong desire or leaning for a certain career or course of action, especially: a divine call to the religious life. ▪ According to the Church: A call from God to a distinctive state of life, in which the person can reach holiness. The Second Vatican Council made it plain that there is a "Universal call [vocatio] to holiness in the Church" (Lumen Gentium, 39). o Vocations in life. Three callings of the Church to us: ▪ Single blessedness Others realize that marriage and consecrated life is not for them. Choose to serve in a ministry while keeping their professional lives and cannot commit to a religious or married life. ▪ Married Life Gives oneself for one another; through thick and thin, love must prevail. Marriage is a sign of the radical love of God for us. Not just an affection but a sacrament of love. ▪ Religious Life People who swear to serve the faith are a lifelong sacrifice. Signifies the new Christ by being his image and spreading his words. Continuation of Jesus’ work, establishing his kingdom here on earth. Twelve Apostles 1. Simon Peter a. Real Name: Petros (GK) meaning “Rock” b. Vitas: i. Fishermen from Capernaum ii. The Rock of the Church (Matthew 16: 18). iii. The chosen leader of the twelve. He was impulsive and emotional. One of the greatest leaders of the early Church. iv. Walking in the water (Matthew 14:22-33, Mark 6:45-52 and John 6:16-21). v. Denied Jesus three times when questioned about Jesus and whether he knew Him (Matthew 26:69-75 and Luke 22: 54-62). vi. He was one of the three who witnessed Jesus’ transfiguration at Mt. Tabor (Matthew 17: 1-9, Mark 9:2-9 and Luke 9:28-36). vii. After Christ’s resurrection, Peter became a courageous evangelist. c. Death: Crucified upside down on a cross in Rome. According to Church tradition, Peter felt unworthy to die in the same way as Jesus had died. d. Remains: St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome 2. Andrew a. Real Name: Andreios (GK) Meaning “Manly or Masculine” b. Vitas: i. Brother of Simon Peter and Fishing partner. ii. John’s gospel says Andrew was the 1st disciple of John the Baptist iii. Fisher of Men c. Death: Crucified on an X-shaped cross, felt not worthy to die on the same shape of the cross as Jesus d. Remains: Patras, Greece. Moved to the Church of the Holy Apostles, Constantinople. 3. James the Great (Son of Zebedee) a. Real Name or Meaning: Yaqob (Hb) Supplanter b. Vitas: i. Brother of John ii. Part of the inner circle of Jesus iii. He is referred to as James the Great to distinguish the two James, who are taller. iv. First to be martyred among the Apostles c. Death: Beheaded during the reign of King Herod of Agrippa 1 d. Remains: St. James Church, Compostela, Spain 4. John the Beloved (Son of Zebedee) a. Real Name: Yohanan (HB) God is Gracious b. Vitas: i. Part of the inner circle of Jesus ii. Became the Bishop of Edessa in modern-day Turkey iii. Faced martyrdom in Rome. Boiled in a huge basin of boiling oil. But miraculously survived from such torture. After surviving, he was then sentenced to work in the mines on the prison island in Patmos. From there, he wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation. c. Helped distribute the loaves and fish during the feeding of the 5000 iii. Convinced Nathaniel to join Jesus’ disciples. c. Death: Some tradition states old age, popularly crucified d. Remains: Holy Apostles Basilica, Rome 6. Bartholomew/ Nathaniel a. Real Name: Bartholomew Bar-Thalmai, Son of Thalmai b. Vitas: i. Called by the name of “Philip” when he came and meet Jesus (John 1: 45-49) c. Death: Flayed alive and beheaded d. Remains: St. Bartholomew Church, Rome 7. Matthew/ Levi a. Real Name: Levi, Mattityahu (HB) Gift of Yahweh. b. Vitas: i. Tax Collector in Capernaum ii. He was hated by his countrymen iii.
