SOCIAL SCIENCE - a branch of science that deals with the institutions and functioning of human society and with the interpersonal relationships of individuals as members of society. SOCIAL SCIENCE ANTHROPOLOGY - SOCIOLOGY POLITICAL SCIENCE ANTHROPOLOGY - The study of the biological, cultural, and social aspects of man. - Derived from Greek words, Anthropos meaning “man,” and logos, which means “study” or “inquiry.” FIELDS ANTHROPOLOGY 1. SOCIAL ANTHROPOLOGY – how social patterns and practices cultural variation across different societies. 2. CULTURAL ANTHROPOLOGY – studies cultural variation across different societies and examines the need to understand culture in its own context. FIELDS ANTHROPOLOGY 3. LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY – studies language and discourse and how they ref le ct and shape different aspect of human society and culture. 4. BIOLOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY – studies the origin of humans as well as the interplay between social factors and the process of human evolution. FIELDS ANTHROPOLOGY 5. ARCHEOLOGY – deals with prehistoric societies by studying their tools and environment. FRANZ BOAS - Father of American Anthropology. - He rejected the biological basis of racism or racial discrimination. ALFRED KOEBER - Father of California Anthropology. - culture must contain explanations. CLIFFORD GEERTZ - advocated for the "thick description" approach. GOALS OF ANTHROPOLOGY 1.- Observe the common things among people 2. Discover what make people differ from each other 3. Create new knowledge through researches about human kind and behavior. SOCIOLOGY - A branch of Social Sciences that deals with the scientif ic study of human interactions, s o c i a l gr o u ps a n d i n s t i t u t i o n s , w h o l e societies, and the human world. The positive Stage AUGUSTE MARIE FRANCOIS XAVIER COMTE KARL MARX - Father of scientific socialism. - Advocated the use of scientif ic methods to uncover the deep s t r u c t u ra l t e n d e n c i e s t h a t underlie great social transitions. EMILE DURKHEIM - Pioneer of Functionalism in sociology - Society possess a reality “sui generis” (that is, its own kind, or a class by itself, unique) MEX WEBER - Stressed the role of rationalization in the development of society. - Pioneer of interpretative sociology. - Rationalization refers to the disenchantment of the world. FIELDS OF SOCIOLOGY - 1. Social Organizations 2. Social Psychology 3. Applied Sociology 4. Human Ecology GOALS OF SOCIOLOGY - 1. Study the nature of humanity 2. Applied Society POLITICAL SCIENCE - The systematic study of politics. It focuses on the fundamental values of equality, freedom, and justice as well as the dynamics of conflict, resolution, and cooperation. PLATO - conflicting interests of different parts of society can be harmonized. ARISTOTLE - the purpose of the government is to foster the good life for its citizen. - man is a Political Animal. JEAN-JACQUES ROUSSEAU - questioned the purpose and place of government and its responsibility for its citizen. JOHN LOCKE - He uses a theory of natural rights to argue that government official have obligations to their citizens. GOALS OF POLITICAL SCIENCE - 1. Make people a better citizen 2. Keep social order and harmony among different groups of people 3. Protect the rights of an individual 4. Avoid conflict and promise cooperation IMPORTANCE OF SOCIAL SCIENCE - - can help us explain how society works and what it means to be human. - Improvement of Society
