TEACHING LEARNERS WHO ARE GIFTED AND TALENTED Insert the Subtitle of Your Presentation OBJECTIVE: At the end of this discussion: Students would know about the teaching strategies that are appropriate for these learners. The common misconceptions about these learners would be addressed and discredited. Brief History of Gifts and Talents 1930 – An interest in education of gifted and talented students started along with the Great Depression and a focus on equity in the USA. 1946 – The American Association for the Study of the Gifted was established. 1957 – In need of gifted and talented students after the launching of Russian Sputnik Rocket. 1960 – A concern for equity arises Brief History of Gifts and Talents 1972 – Sidney Marland provided the first federal definition of the gifted and talented. 1981 – Passage of Education Consolidation and Improvement Act reduced federal funds by 40 percent. 1988 – Jacob K. Javits and Talented Students Education Act was passed increasing the funding and creating the National Research Center on the Gifted DEFINITION: Federal Definition The first federal definition provided and issued by the US Office of Education. Marland Definition It is named after Sydney Marland who is the Commisioner of Education. Requirements of Marland Definition Differential Educational Programs ( Specialized Programs ) High Performance Specific Areas of Capabilities General Intellectual Ability Specific Academic Aptitude Creative or Productive Thinking Leadership Ability Visual and Performing Arts Psychomotor Ability Requirements of Marland Definition 1987 - Marland Definition is modified by the US Department of Education. The definition was quite similar however, psychomotor ability was unlisted in the criteria. The term gifted was changed into a more general term outstanding talent. Stenberg’s 1997 Theory of Intelligence Analytic Giftedness – Being able to take a problem apart, understand the problem and how they are interrelated which is a skill usually measured by conventional intelligence tests. Synthetic Giftedness – Involves insight, creativity, or adeptness at coping with novel situations as a skill typically associated with high achievement in the arts and sciences. Practical Giftedness – This involves applying both analytic and synthetic abilities in solving everyday problems, the kind of skills that characterize people Other Terms for Superior Individuals Talent – Natural indication of a special ability. Creativity – Ability to express unusual and useful ideas and ask crucial and unthought-of questions. Insightful – Knowing how to separate relevant from irrelevant information and having a deeper understanding on how to use them both in a productive way. Genius – Sometimes means to describe someone with a particular capacity in any area as well as often used to indicate extremely rare intellectual quotient or creativity. Precocious – Having developed certain abilities or proclivities at an earlier age which is very unusual Origins of Giftedness Two Factors: Genetic and Other Biological Factors – Neurological functioning and nutrition. Social Factors – Family, school, the peer group, and community. Causes of Gifts and Talents Historically, the question of what causes gifts and talents les to the nature vs. nurture debate about whether certain traits are inherited or due to environmental factors. This debate is largely centered on intelligence as the Origins of Giftedness Characteristics of Gifted and Talented Students 2. Intellectual Characteristics High IQ is still one of the major criteria used to determine the eligibility for gifted and talented programs. The IQ cutoff point used for eligibility into gifted programs is 130 which means that the individual scored higher than the 96 percent of the population. Other Intellectual Characteristics: Advanced Logical Thinking Early Language Development Superior Comprehension Skills Flexibility of Thought Process Origins of Giftedness 2. Academic Characteristics Academic superiority is perhaps the major reason for students to be initially identified as gifted and talented. Superior academic performance, approaching tasks in a diligent manner, demonstrating superior study skills, and applying course content in a creative way can quickly gain the attention of the teacher Origins of Giftedness 3. Creative Characteristics Creative behaviors associated with giftedness Originality and persistence in problem solving Full of ideas Finding ways to do things differently 4. Social Emotional Characteristics High motivation and task persistence High levels of sensitivity, self awareness and idealism Teaching Modifications and Strategies Gifted Education Training Provide teachers with specialized training. Conferences and Workshops Attend conferences focused on gifted education. Accelerated Learning Provide advanced content, compacted curriculum, or early entrance to higher-level courses. Differentiated Instructions Tailor lessons to meet individual needs, interests, and learning styles. Stereotypes Common misconception is that geniuses predisposes people to mental illness. Some become uninterested in school and perform poorly in the curriculum or drop out. Children who are gifted and exhibit leadership ability may be seen as bossy.
