Learning Objective: understand the types and features of digital devices # Explain the uses of mainframe computers # Understand that laptop and desktop computers are types of PCs. # Identify the types of mobile phones # Describe the functions of tablet devices # Describe the purpose and use of some digital devices # Explain the term ‘multifunctional’ and ‘convergence’ Can you identify any of these devices? 4 In a tabular form, describe the functions of the identified devices. 4 5 ❑ DIGITAL DEVICES 🠶 Digital devices are pieces of hardware that use computers or microcontrollers. 🠶They are found everywhere in the digital world. 🠶They enhance and support how we live ❑ TYPES OF DIGITAL DEVICES 🠶 There are many types of digital devices. They range from powerful mainframe computers, used by large organizations for complex processing task such as statistical analysis and bulk data processing, to microprocessors used to control ❑ TYPES OF DIGITAL DEVICES Personal Media Computers Players Mobile Phones Navigation aids Table ts Home Automation Devices Cameras and & Smart Assistants Camcorders Home Entertainment Game Systems Consoles Personal Computers (PC) 🠶 Personal computers (PCs) are common in homes and offices. 🠶They come in many different shapes and sizes. 🠶PCs can be: o Desktop Computers o Laptop o Netbooks Personal Computer – Desktop DesktopsComputers have more space for components than laptops. Easy to upgrade and enhance by adding extra components/functions Can have WiFi cards fitted for wireless communication Desktops needs to have peripheral devices connected to it, such as, a monitor, a printer, a mouse, and a keyboard. Personal Computer – Laptops Battery powered or can use electrical supply Monitor, pointing device, webcam built-in Hard disk drives and optical drives e.g. CD/DVD drives, SD slots. Bluetooth and WiFi built-in Good connectivity (USB, FireWire, HDMI) Less easy to dismantle and upgrade Notebooks are similar but even more compact A notebook computer is likely to be half the size of a laptop and is lighter and easier to Personal Computer – Very small laptopNetbooks that is optimized for internet and email access. It is intended to be light and easy to carry and has a long battery life. Boot up very quickly – used immediately WiFi built in No hard disk or optical drives Solid State SD cards as storage devices – less likely to be Personal Computer – Tablet Bigger than smartphone, but have similar features. Very light and portable Battery powered Virtual, on-screen keyboard Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G for wireless communication Cameras for still and moving images Mobile Phones 🠶 Mobile phones use a SIM card to connect to a mobile phone network. 🠶 SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. 🠶 A SIM card is used to identify the subscriber to a mobile phone network. 🠶 Types of mobile phones: o Specialist Phones Mobile Phones – Specialist Phones These have special features that provides functions that meet particular user needs. For example, some phones have an emergency button that is linked to a list of emergency contacts. When this button is pressed, the phone will call each person on the list until someone answers. Other specialist phones meet user’ accessibility needs e.g. the Alto 2 ‘talking phone’ which is a specialist phone for Mobile Phones – Smart Phones Originally designed to make call while on the move. Small computers with Wi-Fi and mobile phone connectivity to allow them to make phone calls and access the internet. A virtual keyboard to enter text, numbers and other characters. Camera/video camera – video calls. Internet browsing – stream music and videos GPS receiver – to pin point position on a map, get local information, navigational device. Entertainment – play music/videos, play games Productivity – learning, financial management, travel apps, boosts productivity and saves time. Data storage – store photo/music/video, removable storage (e.g. SD Card) Cameras and Camcorders - Functions 🠶 Zoom in using optical or digital zoom 🠶 Take photos/record video and sound 🠶 View videos or photos on an LCD screen 🠶 Store files with SD and micro SD cards 🠶 Crop and edit files using inbuilt software 🠶 View files on TV using USB and HDMI ports. 🠶 Download files to a computer using USB or Home Entertainment Systems – Television 🠶 Television display still and moving images on a screen. 🠶 The quality of the image is set by the resolution (i.e. number of pixels that are used to display the image). 🠶 High Definition (HD) TV screens contain a large number of pixels, which means they have higher resolution. 🠶 The resolution of a TV pixels is stated as o Horizontal Pixels x Vertical Pixels 🠶 For example, 1280 x 720, 1920 x 1080 etc… 🠶 Ultra High Definition (UHD) television screens are sometimes called 4k or 8K because they have Home Entertainment Systems – Sound System 🠶 Sound systems can produce loud, rich sound using high- quality speakers and amplifiers. 🠶 Can play music from CDs or from local storage. 🠶 Can be connected to personal devices like smartphones, media players and tablet devices using wired connections like USB or wireless connections like Bluetooth. 🠶 Can be connected to a LAN via Wi-Fi to play music that is stored on connected devices. Game Consoles 🠶 Game consoles are designed to enable users to play video games on a television screen. 🠶 Games are provided on disks or downloaded from the internet. 🠶 The use of controllers, which are often wireless, to control the characters, vehicles and/or objects in the game. 🠶 Some use motion sensors to allow the player control the game with gestures and body movements. Media Players 🠶 Media players provide video and audio content to a television. 🠶 Content could be streamed directly from the internet or accessed from a local storage. 🠶 Media players can be connected to a television directly of using a wired or wireless network. 🠶 They are controlled using a remote control, or in some cases, smartphone app. Navigation Aids 🠶 Navigation aids (Sat-Navs) use GPS to calculate the best route between two or more locations and can provide updates to the route if it is not followed accurately. 🠶 They are commonly used in cars, delivery vans and ships. 🠶 Navigation aids use information from GPS satellites to determine the exact location of the device on Earth. 🠶 GPS does not need internet connectivity to work, however, navigation aids need internet connectivity in order to update map data. Home Automation Devices & Smart Assistants 🠶 Home automation devices are emerging technologies that can be used to create smart homes. 🠶 For example, they an connect a range of digital devices which sense and control functions in the home, such as temperature and lighting. 🠶 These functions can be controlled from apps on smartphones or the Multifunctional Devices 🠶 A smartphone is a type of mobile phone, which means that its primary function is to make phone calls. 🠶 It can also be used to take photographs or to function as a navigation aid, fitness tracker, music player or handheld games console. 🠶 Because it can perform a range of different functions, it is classed as a multifunctional device. ACTIVITY Multifunctional Devices -Identify another example of multifunctional device - What is the primary function? - What else can it do? Convergence Convergence is when a digital device takes on the functions normally found on another device. Convergen 🠶 GPS, for example, is now found ce on smartphones and sales of SatNavs are falling because of this. 🠶 They are different in that a smartphone has mobile phone network connectivity and is smaller than a tablet device. However, newer smartphones are getting bigger to look more like tablets (phablets) , while tablets devices can now connect to mobile phone networks. 🠶 Similarly, most smartphones have digital To-Do Connecting Devices – Convergence - Research the differences and similarities between smartphones, tablets devices and touch screens laptops.
