1st term Basic 7 wk 3 Topic: Technology of different Information ages II. Technology is the method of using tools and machines to carry out tasks efficiently. Other technology ages include: 1. The Middle Age: this age was between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. This period saw major progress in technology, such as the invention of eyeglasses, gunpowder, silk, the compass, and the astrolabe from the eastern part of the world. Ships and the clocks were also invented. This period was when man started discovering better ways of improving his life. Technology was improved upon as tools and weapons were made from combination of substances. Wars became sophisticated as a result of the invention of gunpowder. 2. The Industrial Age: this period was around the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It witnessed the widespread availability of electric power, the internal combustion engine and factories for production. Features of the industrial age: i. Electricity was discovered during this period. ii. Industrial production of goods started during this period. iii. Turbines and internal - combustion engines were introduced. Note: the industrial age witnessed massive improvement in technology. 3. The electronic age: this period started around 1951. It is the period when electronic calculators, electronic typewriters and the computer system were introduced. Technology became advanced. Features of the electronic age: i. Many electronic machines or devices were discovered during this period. ii. Computers were made. iii. Electronic diodes, the integrated circuits, and chips were invented. 4. Computer and information age: the computer age mark the beginning of a new era. The age which owes everything to inventors. This period is witnessing lots of publication and free - flow of information. The computer and the internet have certainly had a great impact on our society. The computer age is also called the digital age. Features of the computer and information age: I. It reduced the use of paper work. II. It uses microchips and digital technology. III. Internet was introduced. IV. It improves the use of advanced technology.
