Each paragraph should revolve around one idea or argument. Common Writing Issues Writing clarity Grammar hint: Write shorter sentences; fewer problems tend to arise Avoid: Conversational tone, using contractions (e.g., can’t), using too many acronyms (if possible) Ambiguities in writing Try to avoid overuse of slashes (/) – they are ambiguous and can mean “and,” “or,” / “a combination of” Try to avoid the word “it” – what or who is “it”? Replace “it” with a specific person, group, or object Include a noun after “this” – specify what “this” or “these” are.
