MODULE 2 THE DEMANDS OF SOCIETY FROM THE TEACHER AS A PROFESSIONAL Learning Outcomes: 1. Discuss the meaning of the teacher as professional. 2. Explain what the society demands from the teacher as a professional. 3. Discuss the professional competencies that a teacher should possess. 4. Enumerate and discuss the demands of society from the teacher as a person. 5. Cite the personal qualities that a teacher should possess. MODULE 2 LESSON 1: DEMANDS OF SOCIETY FROM THE TEACHER AS A PROFESSIONAL AND AS A PERSON Lesson Outcome: At the end of the lesson, you should have explained the professional competencies that a teacher should possess. Activate: 1. What are the professional traits that the people in the community expect from teachers? 2. Make a graphic organizer of the professional traits that people in the community expect from teachers. Acquire: The demands of the State, community, higher authorities, the school officials, and parents from professional teachers are stated in the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. Your detailed discussion of the code of ethics will be done in the next module dedicated solely for it. The most important responsibility of the professional teacher is to teach effectively. Let us focus on effective teaching, the professional teacher’s main responsibility. In order to teach effectively, the teachers should be an experts in their field of specialization to ensure they can prepare students to respond to the challenges of the 21st century. Shulman (1987) gives the domains of knowledge that the teacher should have: 1. Knowledge of content The teacher should know the subject matter they teach 2. Pedagogical Content Knowledge Pedagogical content knowledge represents the correct blend of content and pedagogy into a framework for understanding how subjects, topics, and lessons are organized for instruction. In short, teachers should master the subject they teaching and they should also know how to teach it effectively. 3. Knowledge about Leaners This is the idea of the different learning styles, thinking styles, and educational needs of the learners 4. General Pedagogical Knowledge This includes general theories and principles of teaching. In addition, these are general pedagogical principles that are applicable to any classroom situation and in any teaching and learning context 5. Knowledge of educational context Educational context may focus on the cultural, economic, political, and educational context that shape and influence education. 6. Curriculum knowledge This is about the knowledge of innovations, curriculum designs. Curriculum materials, and the curriculum process. 7. Knowledge of educational ends, purposes, and values This is the understanding of the principles, theories, and purposes of education to have deep appreciation of the enduring values of education. The teachers’ expertise in content and pedagogy is contributory to their enormous task of developing the mind and character of each learner. Expertise of teachers in their subject areas should be coupled with the following characteristics: 1. Creativity Creativity is the cognitive ability to think outside the box, to develop novel ideas and to innovate. 2. Critical thinking Critical thinking is the ability to give careful judgment as to truth and merit solving problems, making decisions and processing ideas. 3. Commitment Commitment is the state of being dedicated to an activity or a cause. It is also defined as the act of binding oneself (intellectually or emotionally) to a course of action. 4. Character Character refers to a person’s essential qualities. It is the property that defines the apparent nature of an individual. Apply: 1. What are the implications when LPT (Licensed Professional Teacher) is written after the name of a professional teacher? There are many models for teaching effectiveness. In the Philippines, the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers embodies the standards for teaching. The following are the seven domains of the PPST: (The PPST will be discussed in detail in the next lessons.) 1. Content Knowledge and Pedagogy 2. Learning Environment 3. Diversity of Learners 4. Activate: Teachers are often judged more strictly than other professionals. So, how must teachers conduct themselves in order to function well as professionals? 1. Recall the special qualities of your favorite teacher or the teacher who had the greatest impact in your life. Write them down. Share your list with a partner. 2. Compare your list with another pair. 3. Are there common qualities in your list? 4. Consolidate your list as a class. Acquire: Many of the qualities which you listed as a group (of four) or the consolidated may be similar to other groups. Post your list in your Facebook group. When all groups have posted, cluster qualities as a whole class. Rank the qualities based on the number times it occurred on the group lists. Consolidate the answers of your section.
