Triathlon Presentation KHS 132 BY : ● Micheal Ajayi ● Ketyuman Pathak ● Ismail Eltahhan INTRODUCTION TRIATHLON is a combined sport consisting of three disciplines- swimming, cycling and running competed in continuity and succession. The most common form of the sport consists of these three disciplines only; however other variations of the game may also exist. The sport is a part of summer Olympics since 2000. The first triathlon consisting of these three sports (swimmingcycling-running) in succession was held on 25th September 1974 at Mission Bay, San Diego, California. History of TRIATHLON Triathlon started in September 1974 in San Diego, California., when members of the San Diego Track Club (Judy & Collins) organized an event that involved running, cycling and swimming. The entry fee was $1 and 46 athletes competed. The first Ironman was on Oahu in February of 1978. “Whoever finishes first, we’ll call him the Iron Man.” Of the fifteen men to start off the in early morning on February 18th, 1978, twelve completed the race and the world’s first IRONMAN TRIATHLON, Gordon Haller, completed in 11 hours, 46 minutes, and 58 seconds. History of TRIATHLON History of TRIATHLON In 1989, the International Triathlon Union (ITU) was established in Avignon, France, and the first official World Championships were held. The official distance for triathlon was set at a 1,500m swim, a 40km cycle and a 10km run – taken from existing occasions which were already included in the Olympic program In 1991, the ITU launched its first full season of the World Cup circuit. Twelve races were held in nine distinct nations. Increasingly World Cup races have in this way been included each year as the game's intrigue keeps on developing. Triathlon made its Olympic full medal debut at the 2000 Sydney Games. This helped the game to turn out to be considerably progressively well known. It presently has more than 120 partnered national organisations around the globe. What is TRIATHLON? - A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances Types of Triathlon SPRINT: 0.5km to 0.75km swim (0.3 to 0.5 mile), 20km to 22km bike (12.4 to 13 miles), and 5km run (3.1 miles). Super sprints are slightly shorter races: 0.4km swim (0.25 mile), 10km bike (6.2 miles) and 2.5km run (1.5 miles). The sprint is the most popular distance in the sport. Beginning triathletes most often select sprint distances as their first events. OLYMPIC: 1.5km swim (0.9 mile), 40km bike (24.9 miles), and 10km run (6.2 miles). The official distance of the Olympic event, this event requires a good fitness base. HALF IRON: 1.9km swim (1.2 miles), 90km bike (55.9 miles), and 21km run (13 miles). Half Iron events are far more challenging than the shorter distances and sometimes are used as qualifiers for Ironman triathlons. Don't attempt a race at this distance until you've competed in sprint or Olympic events. Types of Triathlon IRONMAN: 3.8km swim (2.4 miles), 180km bike (111.8 miles), and 42km run (26.2 miles — a marathon). Each of the legs alone in this event challenges even the experienced endurance athlete. Train for an Ironman distance only after you've had experience in shorter races and completed at least one Half Iron.
