Policy 507 Chesapeake Fire Department Policy Manual Copyright Lexipol, LLC 2023/03/29, All Rights Reserved.Published with permission by Chesapeake Fire Department Transporting Deceased Patients - 1 Transporting Deceased Patients 507.1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE This policy identifies the circumstances and types of documents required for department Emergency Medical Services (EMS) members relative to transporting deceased persons (Va. Code § 54.1-2819 et seq.). 507.2 POLICY The Chesapeake Fire Department is licensed as an Advanced Life Support Agency with the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services, and provides emergency medical services to the citizens of, and visitors to the City Chesapeake. Members of the department are not authorized to engage in the business of surface transportation or removal of dead human bodies in this Commonwealth.” 507.3 PROCEDURE On arrival of a Chesapeake Fire Department engine or medic unit, if it is determined by the senior advanced life support provider that the victim is deceased, and no resuscitation efforts are to be initiated, and/or transport to the closest hospital emergency department is to be made, the following will be done: (a) Notify the Emergency Communications Center and ask for police officer response. (b) Complete a pre-hospital patient care report noting any unusual circumstances. (c) Attempt to ensure the dignity of the deceased. (d) Do not cover the body without the permission of the police officer in charge of the death investigation. (e) Remain on scene until a police officer arrives and assumes responsibility of the dead human body. (f) Provide emotional support and consolation to family members on scene while waiting for arrival of the police department.
