Tooth colored Restoration Matrices Definition: Matrix: That thing which contains & gives form to any thing Dental matrix: It is a piece of metal or other material which is used to support & give form to the restoration during its packing & hardening. Different types of matrices may be used according to the cavity preparation design and the type of restorative material being used. Functions of matrices: 1- Matrices serve as temporary wall or walls during condensation of plastic restorative materials. 2- To give shape & contour to the restoration & maintain it till hardening 3- Prevent marginal overhangs 4- To keep the gingival tissues away from the cavity margins 5- To protect the adjacent hard & soft tissues Requirements of matrix materials: 1- Easily adapted to teeth & maintain this adaptation during of condensation 2- Easily introduced & removed 3- Easily contoured & shaped 4- Strong enough to resist force of condensation 5- Thin enough to preserve the contact between teeth ( 0.002 inch) 6- Smooth & highly polished à smooth surface texture of restoration 7- Compatible with the restorative materials 8- Provide proper contouring of the restoration 1 Types of Matrices: 1. Circumferential Matrices (uncontoured matrices) Mainly used with amalgam restorations 2. Sectional Matrices (contoured Matrices) Mainly used with tooth colored restorations, i.e. Composite Restorations Types of tooth colored restoration matrices: 1. Posterior Matrices 2. Anterior Matrices Posterior Composite Matrices Requirements of Sectional Matrix systems: 1. Shaping of a non-condensed material i.e. composite 2. Slight Separation of the teeth 3. Sealing of the gingival margin Advantages of Sectional Matrices: 1. Very thin band 2. Pre-contoured band ® Positive contact with filling non- condensable materials 3. Variety of sizes and shapes 4. Satisfactory separation is achieved by the ring 2 The Sectional Matrix System Consists of: 1.Bands (precontoured): Vary in width, length, thickness, coating and transparency Main function is: -Anatomical shaping of the proximal contour 2.Separators (Ring): Resilient design, comes in different forms and mostly universal Main function is: - Maintain adequate teeth separation to compensate for the thickness of the matrix band - Flash elimination 3.Wedges: Vary in material, sizes & shapes Fits in place for cervical adaptation Main function is: - Gingival sealing and adaptaion of the matrix band 3 Types of sectional contoured matrices: 1) Palodent Sectional Matrix system by Dentsply 2) Palodent Plus matrix system by Dentsply 3) Composi-Tight 3D matrix system by Garrison 4 4)TOR VM matrix system 5) V3 matrix system 6) Clear Metal band with Triodent 4 5 7) Bioclear Matrix system 8) Saddle Matrix 9) Class V Clear Matrix 6 Types of uncontoured matrices: 1)Ivory no.1 (sectional) 2)Ivory no.2 (circumferential) 3)The tofflimire matrix system 7 4)Auto matrix 8 Dental Wedges Functions of Dental Wedges 1.Stabilize the matrix band in its place during condensation, packing and hardening of the restorative material. 2.Prevent marginal overhang. 3.prevent seepage of the restorative material from the matrix during packing. 4.Maintain adequate teeth separation to compensate for the thickness of the matrix band. This is essential for proper and tight contact. Types of Dental wedges: 1.Wooden Wedges: The most commonly used. It is made of orange wood, absorbs saliva and increases in size, so providing more stabilization to the matrix band with adequate separation of adjacent teeth. It comes in different sizes, shapes & colors to fit different embrasures sizes. 9 2.Plastic wedges: Similar to wooden wedges but made of plastic. Wooden wedges have better adaptation 3.Flexi wedges: These are flexible elastic wedges 4.Light reflecting wedges: It is made of transparent plastic to be used with light-cured resin composite restorations. It has the advantage of transmitting light for better control of the curing process 5.Double wedge 10 6.Wave wedge 7.Fender wedge 8. Guard wedge: It comes with Palodent Plus matrix system 9. ABC wedges 9.ABC wedges 11
