What’s In In the previous lesson, we have learned the different characteristics, the moods, ideas, messages and functions of the different artworks in each period during the Western Classical art traditions. What is It Renaissance Period (1400-1600) Arts of the Renaissance period covers art works produced during the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries in Europe. The word Renaissance comes from the word “renaitre,” which means, “rebirth, revival and rediscovery.” It pertains to arts, particularly in Italy, such as sculptures, paintings, music, architecture, and literature. Renaissance art was characterized by accurate anatomy, scientific perspective, deeper language. Painter depicted real-life figures. Sculptures were naturalistic portraits of human beings and architecture was of symmetry and balance. 4 FAMOUS RENAISSANCE ARTSWORKS AND ARTISTS Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564) He was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, and a poet who was considered as the greatest living artist in his lifetime. A number of his works rank among the famous artworks during the Renaissance period. Aside from being a talented person, he is considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and known as the ultimate “Renaissance man” because of his intellect, interest, talent and his expression of humanist and classical values. He was popularized in present times through the novel and movie, “Da Vinci Code”. His famous works were “The Last Supper,” which is the most reproduced religious painting of all time and “Mona Lisa,” the most famous and parodied portrait. This developed in Europe around 1600’s. This type of art form was highly- encouraged by the Catholic Church to propagate its dogma. The characteristics associated with the Baroque arts are grandeur, drama, tension, and exaggerated motion. Art forms in Baroque period such as paintings show Biblical works or indirectly in imaginary or symbolic work. Gestures are broader than mannerist gesture. Sculptures are typically larger than life size. FAMOUS BAROQUE ARTWORKS AND ARTISTS Michelangelo Merisi or Amerighi da Caravaggio (1571-1610) He was better known as Caravaggio. He was an Italian artist who wanted to be one who was diverged from classical masters of the Renaissance. He started to be a specialist as painter because of his still life artworks, especially of fruits. He practiced architecture and sculpture, painting, stage design, and was also a playwright.
