# TOA - BS ARCH 1 - Module 4.0 ## Week 15: Lecture Discussion ### 4.01 - Behavioral Stress and Circuits (Familiarization with the different factors affecting behavior) **What is behavior?** - The way in which an animal or person acts in response to a particular situation or stimulus. - The way in which a natural phenomenon or a machine works or functions. **Diagram:** A diagram depicting the influence of personal benefits on personal behavior, leading to personal behavior. The diagram has a human head in the center with gears inside, and the words "personal benefits", "influence", "lead to", and "personal behavior" are written around it. ## Week 16: Lecture Discussion ### 4.4 - Building Materials as Expression of Architectural Design (Familiarization with the building materials as expression of architectural design). Building material signifies structural existence. It demonstrates the presence of aesthetic sense in design, and hence, defines the practicability of the structure. The use of building materials while designing a structure is symbolic of its existence in the field of architecture visualization. Great Architects study and apply those building materials as expression of architectural design and to give definition to the composition in terms of concept, structure, style, sustainability, green architecture, organic architecture, texture, and colors to such effect. ### 4.5 - What are the Building Materials that are Used to Express Architectural Design? Building materials that are used to express architectural design are based on the conceptual nature of the project. Clients will indicate their criteria and architects to interpret using building materials as the concept dictates. **Types of building materials:** - **Structures:** - R.C. Concrete - Steel - Logs - Timber - Bamboo - **Façade:** - Concrete and Glass - Concrete - Steel and Glass - Aluminum Cladding - Titanium Cladding - **Roofing:** - RC water proofed roofing - Ceramic Roof Tile - Clay Roof Tile - Terra cotta roof tile - Concrete roof tile - Copper roof (anodized) - Aluminum roofing - G.I. sheet roofing - **Wall Panel/Lining:** - Natural stones - Rocks - Granites - Marbles - Sand stones - Bricks - Glass panel - Timber lining - Bamboo - Ceramic wall tiles - Mosaic wall tiles - Painted plaster - **Ceiling:** - Narra panels - Plyboard - Plywood - Timber panel (T&G) - Plaster board - Gypsum board - Lawanit panel - Cement board - Bamboo - Sawali - **Flooring:** - Timber planks - Wood parquet - T&G - Laminated timber floor finish - Plyboard - Carpet - Tile carpet - Natural concrete grid finish - Porcelain floor tile - Ceramic floor tile - Mosaic floor tile - Granule floor finish - SHANGHAI plaster wash out - Marble floor - Granite floor **Note:** Building materials in most cases are to be found through geographical location where specific building materials are generally abundant and in that area or manufactured as well. ## Week 17: Lecture Discussion ### 4.6 - Construction Method and Structures as Expression of Architectural Design (Familiarization with the construction method and structures as expression of architectural design). There are several construction methods that architects and builders are using as expression of architectural design, from traditional method to new modern concept with the application of “safety first” method of construction. - **Horizontal construction method:** A simple illustration of a house being built with boards laid horizontally. - **Vertical construction method:** A simple illustration of a man with a wheelbarrow pouring concrete into a foundation. - **Traditional method:** A diagram showing the traditional route of construction: Design, Planning, Specification, Production, Transportation, Erection, and Completion. - **Conventional method:** An illustration of a house with the caption "Construction Method" and a list of construction methods: "Conventional IBS, Modular or Combination" - **Pre-pab method:** An illustration of a wooden frame house being built with the caption "Pre-pab method" - **Pre-cast method:** An illustration of a crane lifting a pre-cast concrete wall panel. - **Post tensioning method:** An illustration of a concrete beam with steel cables running through it. - **Wet construction method:** An illustration of two men with trowels working with concrete. - **Dry construction method:** An illustration of a worker with a dry wall panel inserting it into a wall frame. ### 4.7 - What are the Construction Methods? Construction methods are the procedures and techniques that are used during the building process. - **Floor construction methods:** An illustration shows different stages of the construction of a wooden floor. - **Wall construction methods:** An illustration of a crane lifting a pre-cast wall. ## Week 18: Lecture Discussion ### 4.8 - What are Examples of Structures that are Expression of Architectural Design? Examples of structures that are expression of architectural design should have: - The importance of function - The uniqueness of form - The materials used, and - The construction method they adopted. **Examples of structures:** - Pyramid in Giza, Egypt - Parthenon in Acropolis, Athens - Colosseum in Rome, Italy - Machu Picchu in Peru - Great Wall in China - Taj Mahal in India - Eiffel Tower in Paris France - The Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai - Coconut Palace in Pasay, MM Philippines - Heritage City in Vigan, Philippines **Images:** - An illustration of a pyramid. - An illustration of the Parthenon. - An illustration of the Colosseum. - An illustration of Machu Picchu. - An illustration of the Great Wall of China. - An illustration of the Taj Mahal. - An illustration of the Eiffel Tower. - An illustration of the Burj Khalifa. - An illustration of the Coconut Palace. - An illustration of Heritage City in Vigan. ### 4.9 - Building Materials Used in the Filipino Houses In rural areas by Filipino tradition standard, we are still adopting the vernacular architecture due to our traditional, cultural, and heritage values. Regional designs are adopted and LOCAL BUILDING MATERIALS used. Sustainability and availability are factors of why we opted for, bamboo, nipa, sawali, or bahay na bato because it is in the local market. **Image:** - An illustration of a traditional Filipino house. ### 4.10 - Review of Plate Project Nos. (PP1), (PP2) and Research Report 1 (RRI). - These major activities are to be included in the class individual text book, as part of final grading and will be future references. **Image:** - Illustration of a modern house.
