The Three Main Steps for Novice Translators 1. Analysis of the Source Text (SL) What it means: The translator must carefully analyze the structure and meaning of the original text in the Source Language (SL). This includes understanding the sentence structure and the meaning of words in context. Key Points: Understand both syntactic (sentence structure) and semantic (meaning) elements. Pay attention to style (e.g., literary, technical, or persuasive) and language level (formal or informal). Break down sentences into clauses and analyze new words or expressions using prefixes, suffixes, roots, etc. Example: SL Sentence: "The scientist discovered the formula." Analyze whether "formula" means a scientific formula or a set plan, depending on the context. Transfer of Meaning from SL to Target Language (TL) What it means: After analyzing the SL text, the translator transfers its meaning into the Target Language (TL). This step involves converting not just the words but also the underlying meaning, while considering cultural nuances. Key Points: Consider cultural elements—how they affect meaning and might require adaptation in the TL. Focus on conveying function, not just literal translation. Avoid formal word-for-word correspondences; prioritize how the meaning would be understood in the TL. Example: SL Sentence: "He kicked the bucket.“ Transfer: In English, this idiom means someone passed away. In Arabic, translating it literally ( )ركل الدلوwouldn’t make sense. Instead, it should be translated to the equivalent phrase in Arabic, like "( "توفيhe died). 3. Restructuring in the Target Language (TL) What it means: The final step is reorganizing the translated material into a natural, coherent text in the TL. This ensures that the translation is smooth, grammatically correct, and culturally appropriate. Key Points: Make sure the text sounds natural to TL speakers, not just grammatically correct. Consider rhetorical and stylistic features (e.g., tone, emphasis, repetition) in the TL. If a perfect equivalent doesn’t exist, explain cultural or contextual differences (e.g., using a footnote). Example: SL Sentence: "She’s the apple of his eye." In Arabic, this could be adapted as "( "هي قرة عينهa cultural equivalent), as the literal translation wouldn’t convey the intended emotional significance.
