The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary 7 October St Dominic & The Rosary The origin of the Rosary, according to tradition, began in 1214 when the Blessed Virgin Mary gave St Dominic the Rosary prayer. St Dominic was asked by Mary to preach the Rosary in order to safe guard people against evil and sin. Many years later, in October 1571, a Christian fleet went into battle at Lepanto. Pope Pius V, himself a Dominican, had called on all Christians to join in praying the Rosary as the army of the Holy League went into battle. They won the battle and freed 15,000 Christian slaves. They attributed their victory to Mary and the praying of the Rosary. The anniversary of this day became known as the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary and the month of October was dedicated to the praying of the Rosary. The Rosary is a popular devotion loved and practised by many. Even though Marian in character, it contains the whole Gospel story and therefore is truly a Christ-centred prayer. The Rosary is divided into decades. A decade is one “Our Father” followed by ten “Hail Mary’s” and a “Glory Be”. There are 20 stories to think about. Each story is called a “Mystery”. The Joyful Mysteries 1) The Annunciation 2) The Visitation 3) The Birth of Jesus 4) The Presentation 5) Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple Day: Monday and Saturday The Sorrowful Mysteries 1) The Agony in the Garden 2) The Scourging at the Pillar 3) Crowning with thorns 4) Carrying of the cross 5) The Crucifixion Day: Tuesday and Friday The Glorious Mysteries 1) The Resurrection 2) The Ascension 3) Descent of the Holy Spirit 4) The Assumption 5) The Coronation Day: Wednesday and Sunday Mysteries of Light – Luminous Mysteries 1) Baptism Of Jesus 2) The wedding at Cana 3) Proclamation of the Kingdom of God 4) The Transfiguration 5) Institution of the Eucharist Day: Thursday How to pray the Rosary The Rosary is begun with the sign of the Cross, followed by the Apostles Creed, followed by one Our Father, 3 Hail Mary’s, and a Glory Be. Then the name of the chosen decade is announced and 1 Our Father is said, followed by 10 Hail Mary’s and a Glory Be. The Fatima prayer is then said and to finish we say together the Hail Holy Queen. Pope John Paul II had great devotion to Mary and he asked people to pray the Rosary Prayer during the month of October for peace in our world. Let us pray together 1 decade of the Rosary. Prayers of the Rosary The Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Prayers of the Rosary The Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son, Our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into Hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the Rosary Our Father x 1 Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Prayers of the Rosary Hail Mary x 3 Hail Mary, full of grace! the Lord is with thee; blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Prayers of the Rosary Glory be to the Father x 1 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Prayers of the Rosary The Glorious Mysteries: The Resurrection of Our Lord Our Father x 1 Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Prayers of the Rosary Hail Mary x 10 Hail Mary, full of grace! the Lord is with thee; blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Amen. Prayers of the Rosary Fatima Prayer O My Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of Your mercy. Hail Holy Queen Hail! Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, O most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement! O loving! O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Prayer After The Rosary O God, whose only-begotten Son, by His life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech Thee, that, meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen. Sign of the Cross In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
