THE POWERS OF THE MIND Ms. Maria Sahara M. Bidon Special Science Teacher I LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this module, you will be able to: Discuss that understanding the left and right brain functions may help in improving one’s learning; Explore mind-mapping techniques suited to right brain- or left brain dominant thinking styles; and Make a plan to improve learning using both left and right brain development. B B R R A A I I N N BRAIN POWER The wrinkled, pinkish-gray, three-pound organ that is primarily composed of fat and water. It is a jelly-like mass topping off the spinal cord which fires electrical signals to your other organs telling it how to move/respond. BRAIN The brain is the organ inside the head that controls all body functions of a human being. It is protected by the cranium and it contains blood vessels and nerves, including neurons and glial cells. BRAIN It is the most important organ in the human body because it controls our actions and reactions, allows us to think and feel and enables us to have memories. DIFFERENT parts and It’s function BRAIN The three (3) major parts – brain stem, cerebrum and cerebellum. Brain stem It is the structure that connects the cerebrum of the brain to the spinal cord and cerebellum. It is composed of three sections in descending order: the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata. CEREBRUM The largest part of the brain taking up to 85% of the brain’s weight. It performs higher functions like interpreting touch, vision, hearing, speech, reasoning, emotions, learning, and fine control of movements. CEREBRUM It has four (4) lobes namely: a. Frontal Lobe b. Parietal Lobe c. Occipital Lobe d. Temporal Lobe FRONTAL LOBE Speech Behavior and personality Emotions Body movement Intelligence and self-awareness PARIETAL LOBE Language and symbol use Visual perception Sense of touch, pressure, and pain Giving meaning to signals from other sensory information TEMPORAL LOBE Memory Hearing Understanding language Organization and patterns OCCIPITAL LOBE light color movement spatial orientation CEREBELLUM It sits at the lower back of the brain, below, the rear cerebrum and behind the brain stem. Only accounts for around 10% of the brain's weight but contains up to 80% of all neurons in the organ. Primarily responsible for muscle control, including balance and movement. The critical age There is a consensus among researchers that brain cells regenerate throughout life, said by Doug Postels, a pediatric neurosurgeon in New Orleans, but that new growth happens very slowly after a certain age. “The size of the brain doesn’t increase much after 3”, Postel explains. During the first three (3) years of life, the brain experiences most of its growth and develops most of its potential for learning. 1. The brain parts are adaptable. 2. Deprivation of intellectual stimulation occurs dramatically before age 3. The time for synaptogenesis or the creation of pathways for brain cells to communicate, occurs. BRAIN DOMINANCE 1. I am very organized. 2. I remember faces more than names. 3. I think things through before making a decision. 4. If someone’s mad at me, I can tell even without the person saying a word. BRAIN DOMINANCE 1. I work best in a quiet place. 2. I daydream a lot. 3. I hate taking risk. 4. I tend to get emotional. 5. I make a to-do-list. 6. I trust my “gut instinct”. YOU CAN GROW YOUR INTELLiGENCE.. The more that you challenge your mind to learn, the more your brain cells grow. The brain is more like a muscle – it changes and gets stronger when you use it. YOU CAN GROW YOUR INTELLiGENCE.. Most people don’t know that when they practice and learn new things, parts of their brain change and get larger a lot like muscles do when they exercise. THANK YOU! I hope you learn something new today! MIND MAPPING WHAT IS MIND – MAPPING? It was invented by Tony Buzan. It is a powerful thinking tool that mirrors the way the brain works. Has a wide variety of uses like note taking, revision planning, planning for writing and problem solving. THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT ‘DUMP’ AND ‘SMART’
