The Basics of Genetics and its History Maribel D. Ganeb, Ph.D The Basics of Genetics What is Genetics? -a branch of biology that deals with the heredity of an organism What is Inheritance? Every living thing has a set of characteristics inherited from its parent or parents. Genetics is the scientific study of heredity. Three Branches of Genetics 1. Transmission Genetics (classical genetics) - Transmission of genes from generation to generation and how genes recombine. 2. Molecular Genetics - Structure and functions of genes at the molecular level. 3. Population Genetics - Distribution of genes in populations. (in mathematical term) Why is Genetics important to Society? Agriculture (genetically engineered plants, wheat resistant to rust) Livestock (different breeds, leaner beef, polled vs. horned cattle) A. Medicine (to discover the cancer-causing gene, diagnose a disease, gene therapy, genetic screening, etc.) The History of Genetics Let us try to sequence the events! Let us Challenge Ourselves!
