Communication has been made easier with relatively new and efficient ways of reaching. This constant state of being interconnected brings about the notion of a “global village”. Every citizen in the world is part of such classification making citizens not only members of their respective home countries but also a global citizen. Self as a Global Citizen According to Douglas (2001), there are characteristics to exemplified by a global citizen. Individuals must be aware of the following: 1. Wider World; 2. Respect and Value Diversity; 3. Understanding of how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically, and environmentally; 4. Outraged by Social Injustice; Self as a Global Citizen 5. Must participate in and contribute to the community at all levels from local to global; 6. Willingness to act to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place; & 7. Take responsibility for his/her actions. These characteristics which are said to be exemplified by a global citizen can all be acquired through education, particularly one that focuses on the global and multicultural aspects. Global Citizenship in a Global Civil Society There is no agreement on a simple definition of civil society. The major question whether it encompasses economic activity, both Hegel and Marx conceptualized civil society as the sphere defined by the market economy and its resulting individualism and socially divisive effects. Global Citizenship in a Global Civil Society But most theorist of civil society focuses instead on religious, educational, cultural and leisure institutions, professional bodies, interest groups and charities, and campaigning groups. Civil Society also suggests very informal links such as the primary groups that covers your family and friends. Education as a Key Aspect Education in this regard helps the learner enhance his/her own perception with the impact of one’s own actions to other cultures and the effects of actions of other people from other cultures with one’s own (Pae, 2003). Global education opens learners’ minds to the multitude of customs and ways of life from across all walks of life, lessening one’s prejudices and biases. Microsystems Role in Global Citizenship The role of Microsystems such as families and local communities is of great importance in solidifying a global perspective. In essence, global education must be holistic and requires the effort of not only the educators but of parents, peers, and even policy makers (Pae, 2003). Microsystems Role in Global Citizenship In a sense, not only does this form of education focus on giving learners life skills but also teaching them the importance of values which will help the people gain a wider and clearer perspective of a global community and enable them to effectively interact with other cultures. Conclusion Engaging with other people with different nationalities with these attributes can prove beneficial for the rest of mankind in the long run since one is not only confined in the pursuit of personal interest but is also conscious about the lives, desire, and needs of other individuals hailing from other cultures. Being able to peacefully coexist with one another with a global perspective in mind can enable individuals to efficiently distribute and consume resources without the need for coercion. In this era of interconnectivity between and among human beings, a global perspective is a necessity. Global citizens know that mankind must acquire a symbiotic relationship among one another for the entire human species and human culture to survive.
