##### City of Malolos, Bulacan **College of Sports Exercise and Recreation** **TABLE TENNIS** **Description** This sport is played indoors because of the ball used in the game. The objective of the game is to hit the ball over the net in such a way that the opponent cannot return it. There are three types of competition such as Singles, Doubles and Mixed doubles. Two players for singles and four players for Doubles and Mixed doubles game. For elimination rounds, the best of five sets is applied while for championship match the best of seven sets is required. **Historical Background** The game started as early as 1880's in Old China, the best players came from China and Japan. It was Gassamer, Pingpong, and whipwapp were the term used during the 1800's. It was in 1890, when James Gibb introduced the celluloid ball and in 1902 the rubber face racket was introduced by E.C. Goode. In 1926, the United States Table Tennis Association was organized while the Table Tennis Association of the Philippines was formed in the year 1900's. The ITTF ( International Table Tennis Federation ) was the only governing body who can modify the rules of the game. **Apparatus/Equipment used in the game** **Table** The playing surface is rectangular in shape with a dark color matt paint. The length is 2.74 m. X 1.52 m. in width with a thickness of 1 inch. The line drawn at the center of the table is used for doubles game while the line on the side measures 2 cm. The height of the table from the floor is 76 cm. or 2 feet six inches. **Racket** The racket is made of wood, with a rubber faced on both sides. The 4 mm. thickness of the racket is required in all types of competition. The racket can be of any size and shape but the blade shall be flat and rigid. Parts of the Racket 1\. Handle 2\. Blade 3\. Rubber **Ball** The ball shall be spherical in shape with a diameter of 40+ mm. diameter and weighs 2.7 grams. It is made of celluloid material and is coloured white or orange, and matt. **Net** The net is. 15.25 cm. high and extends along the width of the table, dividing into two equal parts **Basic Skills of the Game** 1\. Stroke -- is the proper way of hitting the ball. Kinds of stroke 1\. Forehand stroke 2\. Backhand stroke 2\. Service -- is putting the on play. 3\. Grip -- Is the proper way of holding the racket. Kinds of grip 1\. Shake hand grip -- as if you are shaking hand with the racket. 2\. Penhold grip -- as if you are holding a pen. 4\. Returning and receiving the ball -- The correct stroke should be applied in returning and receiving the ball to the opposing side. 5\. Order of play -- The server should bounce the ball first on his side of the table, before it goes over to the table of the opposing side and vice versa. **Rules of the Game** A game shall be won by the player or pair first scoring 11 points unless both players or pairs score 10 points, when the game shall be won by the first player or pair subsequently gaining a lead of 2 points. **Match** A match shall consist of the ff: 1\. Best of 5 sets ( Elimination round ) 2\. Best of 7 sets ( Championship match ) **Let** A rally shall be a let: If in the service the ball touches the net assembly, provided the service is otherwise correct or the ball is obstructed by the receiver or his or her partner; After touching the receiver's court returns in the direction of the net; Comes to rest on the receiver's court; In singles leaves the receiver's court after touching it by either of its sidelines. **Terminologies:** **Ace --** is a good serve that cannot be return. **All** -- the same score. **Backhand --** is a shot executed where the back of your hand is pointing towards the opponent, to the left of the elbow for a right handed player and vice versa. **Backspin --** A type of spin with a push which is used as defensive shot used to successfully return a drive. **Block** -- is a response to the powerful looping game. **Chop --** A return made with forward and downward movement similar to that we used in chopping with an axe. **Drive --** is a shot with a moderate speed and a flat trajectory. It is used to put the under pressure and force them to make an error. **Dead Ball --** the ball is not on play. **Deuce** -- extension **Doubles --** a format in table tennis where two people play on each side and must alternate turns at striking the ball. **Drop shot** -- a short shot played close to the net. **Free hand --** is the hand not carrying the racket. **Grip --** is the proper way of holding the racket. **ITTF --** International Table Tennis Federation ( the governing body for the sport of table tennis. **Let --** a stoppage of play as a result of a serve hitting the net or interference Outside the playing court. **Loop --** an offensive shot that carries a tremendous amount of topspin. **Match** -- a competition format with the winner winning two of three or three Of five games. **Net --** a fabric used as a barrier to divide the tennis table into two (2) equal sections. **Point --** is a rally of which the result is scored. **Push --** is a defensive shot used to successfully return backspin shots, were the racket is open to lift the backspin over the net. **Racket --** paddle/ bat **Rally --** the period in which the ball is on play. **Reglue --** to reapply new rubber or speed glue new or existing rubber to the Blade. **The Choice of Serving, Receiving and Ends** 1\. The right to make first choice shall be decided by lot. 2\. The player or pair winning the right may; a\. Choose to serve or to receive first, when the loser shall have the choice of ends. b\. Choose an end, when the loser shall have the choice of serving or receiving first. c\. Require the loser to make the first choice, when the winner shall have whichever choice is not made by the loser.
