UNIT 2 GROWING PLANTS Growing Plants Plants differ in many ways, but they all need certain things to grow well. Plants can be tall or short, big or small. We can group plants in may ways just by looking at their leaves or flowers. Parts of a Plant That Help It Grow Seeds Seeds need water and light to grow. They also need to stay warm so they can germinate. Parts of a Plant That Help It Grow Roots Roots grow down into the soil and the plant soaks up water with nutrients (food) into the plant. Parts of a Plant That Help It Grow Greenhous e Often seeds are grown in a greenhouse. A greenhouse keeps the air moist and the temperature warm, a perfect place for seeds to grow. Sunlight Sunlight helps plants to grow. Leaves turn sunlight into food for the plants. This process is called photosynthesis. Some plants need to be in full sun and other plants need to be in part shade. Sunlight also helps to keep plants warm in winter. Water Plants need water to grow and be heathy, just like people do. Seeds need water to germinate. Water allows the seed to go soft and the roots and stem can then start to grow. Plants need water to help them suck nutrients (food) up through their roots from the soil. Plants will die if they dry out which means they didn’t get enough water. Growing Plants Plants are living things, so they need water to stay alive. The picture shows some leaves in glasses of colored water. How do you know they are taking up the colored water? What evidence can you see? ROOTS Look at this plant. It has roots in the soil. Can you see the roots? Roots have many tiny hairs to help take in a lot of water. Roots have two functions. Function means job. 1. They hold the plant in the ground. 2. They take in water and minerals from the soil. ROOTS Minerals are extra nutrients that help plants to grow well. As a plant grow, its roots grow, too. It needs water and minerals. It needs to be held firmly in the soil. The three main parts of a seed are the embryo, endosperm, and seed coat. The three main parts of a seed are the embryo, endosperm, and seed coat. embryo endosperm seed coat Seed coat is a protective covering that surrounds the seed and protects it from damage. embryo endosperm seed coat Embryo is a tiny plant that contains the precursor tissues for different parts of the plant, such as a root, stem, and leaves. embryo endosperm seed coat Endosperm is a nutritive tissue that stores food for the embryo. Seed germination is the process by which a seed grows into a seedling. It occurs when a seed is exposed to the right conditions, such as water, oxygen, and the right temperature.
