Vinluan, Amy Rose B. Objectives After studying this chapter, you will be able to: Identify the Principles and Characteristics of good speech. Realize the importance of having a good speech and delivery. Understand why and when speech is good. Terminologies ▪ Speech – The expression of or the ability to express thoughts and feelings by articulate sounds. A formal address or discourse delivered to an audience. PRINCIPLES OF GOOD SPEECH Good Speech is Socially Responsible – The socially responsible speaker must constantly respect facts and be aware of sound reasoning and judgements. Good speech reveals a speaker with good personal qualifications – Almost always the speaker with strong personal qualification is in the best position to win the respect of the listener. Good speech is directed to serve a specific purpose – A purposeless speech meanders aimlessly. But the purposiveness of a speech forces the speaker to follow a course to attain his aim. Good speech deals with worthwhile subjects – The best resources of both speaker and audience are to be tapped. Good speech us based on the best available materials – A substantial speech is inclined to attract and hold the attention of the listener. Good speech is analytical – Outlining the speech lends to lucid analysis which comes to perfection as the speaker delivers his piece. Good Speech is based on sound method – Planning a speech improves the delivery and leads to effective communication. Good speech claims the attention and interest of the listener – The speaker analyzes and adapts to his audience; listener analyzes and adapts to the speaker to the speaker. Good speech makes effective use of voice and bodily action – Voice and bodily action produce symbols which convey the speech and to which the audience reacts. CHARACTERISTICS OF SPEECH Clarity – The voice of the speaker should be clear, tone should vary and pitch should be pleasant. Definiteness of message – The message of the speech should be definite and relevant with the subject matter. Conciseness – The audience becomes impatient to a long speech. Hence, speech should be as concise as possible. Interesting – Speech should be delivered in an interesting and pleasing way so that the audience is motivated to pay attention. Speaking Slowly – An ideal speech is one which is delivered slowly and usual tone. Free from emotions - Another important feature of good speech is that it should be delivered in an unbiased and unemotional way. Ensuring Participation of Audience – A good speech is one which ensures participation from the audience with the speaker. Brevity – It is very difficult to hold the attention of the listeners for more than 15 to 20 minutes. Use of Body Language – Good Speech goes with necessary body language. Key Concepts JAMES H.
