Human Development and Personal Development What is personal development? How do you differentiate human development and personal development? Human Personal Development Development This pertains to one's This covers the whole own development and lifespan of human growth within the existence in relation to context of the three the three domains aspects of human development. What are the three aspects or domains of human development as per Papalia and Feldman, 2012? 1. Physical Development 2.Cognitive Development 3.Psychosocial Development Physical Development This domain covers the growth of the body and brain, motor and sensory skills, and even physical health. Cognitive Development This domain covers our capacity to learn, to speak, to understand, to reason, and to create. Psychosocial Development This domain covers our social interaction with other people, our emotions, attitudes, self- identity, personality, beliefs, and values. Human Development is influenced by: 1. Heredity 2.Environment 3.Maturation Heredity The inborn traits passed by the generations of offspring from both sides of the biological parents' families. Environment The world outside of ourselves and the experiences that result from our contact and interaction with the external world. Maturation The natural progression of the brain and the body that affects the cognitive (thinking and intelligence), psychological (emotion, attitude, and self-identity), and social (relationships) dimensions of a person. Human Personal Development Development This pertains to one's This covers the whole own development and lifespan of human growth within the existence in relation to context of the three the three domains aspects of human development. Personal Development This may be defined as a process in which persons reflects upon themselves, understand who they are, accept what they discover about themselves, and learn (unlearn) new sets of values, attitudes, behavior, and thinking skills to reach their fullest potential as human beings. What is the difference between personal and personality? What is personality development? Personal Personality belonging or the set of emotional relating to a qualities, ways of particular person behaving, etc., that of, relating to, or makes a person affecting a different particular person distinction or excellence of personal and social traits It refers to the process of Personality enhancing and improving one’s personality through Development deliberate study and practice. So, is it personal development or personality development? Where did personal development originate? When the first Homo sapiens walked the face of the earth, they drew figures on their cave walls attempted to narrate their experiences During the time of the such as hunting Western Philosophers, particularly Greek thinkers, Plato argued that building character, as much as But in the Eastern thought, intelligence, is what the great Chinese being education is all about. desires to become the "superior man", not just to his peers and followers, but to himself most especially. So today, where is personal development based on? Psychology Psychology Psychology, being the study of human thinking and behavior, serves as the foundation for personal development, specifically the Humanistic and Positive Psychology which started in the 1950s. Two proponents of Humanistic Psychology Abraham Maslow Carl Rogers Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Abraham Maslow theorized the five stages of human development based on the hierarchy of needs, peaking in what he termed as "self- actualization" Self-actualization Esteem Love/Belonging Safety Physiological Physiological Needs These are biological requirements for human survival (ex. air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth, sleep). If these needs are not satisfied, the human body cannot function optimally. Maslow considered physiological needs the most important as all the other needs are met. Safety Needs People want to experience order, predictability and control in their lives. These needs can be fulfilled by the family and society (ex. Police, school, business and medical care). For example, emotional security, financial security (e.g. employment, social welfare), law and order, freedom from fear, social stability, property, health and well-being (e.g. safety against accidents and injury). Love and Belongingness Needs The need for interpersonal relationships motivates behavior. Example includes friendship, intimacy, trust and acceptance, receiving and giving affection and love. Affiliating, being part of a group (family, friends, work). Esteem Needs Maslow classifies this into two categories: (i) esteem for oneself (e.g. dignity, achievement, mastery, and independence) and (ii) the desire for reputation or respect from others (e.g. status and prestige). Maslow indicated that the need for respect or reputation is most important for children and adolescents and precedes real self-esteem or dignity. Self-actualization Needs Self-actualization is the highest level in Maslow's hierarchy, and refer to the realization of persons' potential, self- fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences. Maslow (1943) describes this level as the desire to accomplish everything that one can, to become the most that one can be. So, does development only happen once in our lives? Development is expected across different life stages. There are particular milestones that must be met in order to be assured that an individual is progressing and in the normal spectrum. Each stage provides opportunity to grow and these growths are expected. So, at what developmental stage are you in right now? Adolescence Stage The transition between Childhood and Adulthood. Do you believe that personal development is important in anyone's lives? How so?
