Specific exercise drives endogenous “medicine” – Hormones and cytokines Direct structural adaptation and repair Facilitates other therapies Clients With Respiratory Conditions Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder ▪ CHRONIC BRONCHITIS- ▪ EMPHYSEMA- involves a productive cough Abnormal and permanent most days for 3 months for enlargement of the two successive years respiratory bronchioles and alveoli. Asthma Chronic inflammatory disorder that leads to airway hyperactivity Causes – Allergic reactions to antigens (pollen, smoke, dust) – Viral infections of the bronchi, sinuses, or tonsils – Exercise May have normal resting pulmonary function but experience bronchospasms during exercise Evidence for Exercise in Those with Lung Disease Improvements come in the form of quality of life and increased ability to perform or tolerate ADLs – Little effect or no effect on VO2max, pulmonary function testing, mortality rates Goals: Improve general health Optimize O2 saturation Make ADLs easier Improve self-efficacy Testing and Evaluation Generally, this population is limited more by the lungs than the CV system GXT may be used 6- to 12-minute walk tests are common Pulmonary function testing COPD: FEV1
