Types of Speech Context TABLE OF CONTENTS Intrapersonal Communication Interpersonal Communication Dyadic communication Small group communication Public communication Mass communication Organizational communication Intercultural communication Intrapersonal Communication Intrapersonal communication refers to the internal dialogue or communication that occurs within an individual's mind. It involves: 1. Self-talk: Thinking, reflecting, or reasoning with oneself. 2. Internal monologue: Verbal or non-verbal thoughts, feelings, and ideas. 3. Self-awareness: Recognizing and understanding one's thoughts, emotions, and motivations. Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal communication is the process of exchange of information, ideas and feelings between two or more people through verbal or non-verbal methods. It often includes face-to-face exchange of information, in a form of voice, facial expressions, body language and gestures. The level of one’s interpersonal communication skills is measured through the effectiveness of transferring messages to others. Dyadic Communication Dyadic communication involves only two participants forming a dyad. One speaker and one listener come together to exchange thoughts, ideas, opinions, and information. The role of speaker and listener are not fixed, they are interchangeable. Small group Communication Small group communication refers to communication among three or more people who interact verbally and nonverbal, perform certain informal roles with respect to one another, feel a sense of belonging and collaborate to achieve a desired goal. Public Communication Public communication is different from dyadic or small group communication in that one speaker addresses many listeners, collectively known as an audience. There is no interchanging of the speaker and listeners roles. Many public communication events are formal. Mass Communication Mass communication is any above human verbal interactions carried out with the aid of mass media technology. With the advent of internet and World Wide Web, mass communication now includes social media, which allow for the use of technology by everyone. Organizational Communication Organizational communication refers to the communication that takes place between people who are working towards common goals within an organization. It consists of the interactions that take place for the purpose of working together towards these goals or conducting business in general. Intercultural Communication Intercultural communication is the exchange of concepts, traditions, values, and practices between and among people of different nationalities and ways of life. To make the exchange more meaningful, there should be a deeper understanding and awareness of what makes various nationalities different and uniques, but also similar and familiar. Types of Speech Styles TABLE OF CONTENTS Intimate style Casual style Consultative style Formal style Frozen style Intimate Style It is a non-public speech style that uses private vocabulary and includes nonverbal messages. It is a style in which meaning is shared even without “correct linguistic forms”. This occurs among people who have known each other for a long time and have shared many experiences. Casual Style It is a speech style used among friends and acquaintances that do not require background information. The use of slang is common and interruptions occur of often. Casual style is used when there are no social barriers to consider. Consultative Style To consult is to ask or seek advice from a person, usually a professional who has an expertise on a specific subject or field. You use the consultative style of speech when talking to a doctor, lawyer, engineer, counselor, and other professionals who you think can help you with your need for information, advice, or opinion. Formal Style Formal style is used only for imparting information. The speech is well-organized and correct in grammar and diction. Technical vocabulary and exact definitions are important in the formal style. Straightforward and direct, with no circumlocution, this style does not allow interruptions. Frozen Style Is a formal style whose quality is static, ritualistic, and may even be archaic. Frozen style is exemplified by prayers that have been recited in the same way for years, the Pledge of Allegiance or Panatang Makabayan etc. The End
