Quadriceps “Tent” the skin of the distal limb and insert Semimembrinosus, Semitendinosus the needle perpendicularly to the skin Cranial OR caudal to the femur with needle Locations pointed caudally, careful to avoid the sciatic nerve Locations LEAVE NEEDLE ATTACHED TO LEAVE NEEDLE ATTACHED TO SYRINGE WHEN INJECTING SYRINGE WHEN INJECTING SPECIES INJECTIONS OVINE & CAPRINE Techniques can be applied to both ovine and caprine patients INTRAMUSCULAR SUBCUTANEOUS IM SQ 21-20 Ga 1" needle 22-18 Ga 1-1.5" needle NECK NECK Triangle : Cranial to shoulder, ventral “Tent” triangle : Cranial to shoulder, to nuchal ligament, dorsal to cervical ventral to nuchal ligament, dorsal to vertebrae cervical vertebrae BEHIND TRICEPS / AXILLA “Tent” skin and insert needle perpendicular to tented skin Location Locations REMOVE NEEDLE FROM SYRINGE WHEN INSERTING INTO MUSCLE, THEN ATTACH LEAVE NEEDLE ATTACHED TO SYRINGE TO INJECT SYRINGE WHEN INJECTING SPECIES INJECTIONS EQUINE INTRAMUSCULAR SUBCUTANEOUS IM SQ 20-18 Ga 1.5" needle NECK Triangle : Cranial to shoulder, ventral to nuchal ligament, dorsal to transverse processes of cervical vertebrae. Most common location for injections.
