The Milky Way Our Solar System is part of the “Milky Way” galaxy. The Sun A massive, luminous sphere of hot plasma that is the central star of the solar system. It provides light, heat, and energy to the planets and other objects in orbit around it. The Sun The sun is a yellow dwarf star at the center of the Solar System. The sun is the biggest object in the Solar System. The sun is known for its cool and dark spots called “sunspots”. The Moon The moon, also known as “natural satellite”, orbit planets and asteroids in our Solar System. There are more than 200 moons in our Solar System. Moons come in different sizes, shapes, and types. Fastest orbiting planet. Planet nearest to the sun. One side of the planet can be 800 degrees Fahrenheit when the other can be -280 degree Fahrenheit at the same time. Venus On Venus you weigh only 91% of what you weigh on Earth. Venus has 90 times the pressure of Earth. Venus has volcanoes like Earth. Rotates in the opposite direction of Earth. Earth 23 hours and 56 min=1 Earth day (rotation) 365 days =1 Earth year (revolution) Earth is warm enough to keep most of its water from freezing and cold enough to keep its water from boiling Mars Air Pressure on Mars is the same as 30 km above the Earth’s surface Mars is in the form of ice. Evidence that water was there at one time. Mars has volcanic history like Earth. It has the tallest mount of the planets (Olympus Mons) 3x’s size of Mt. Everest. Outer Planets (Gas Planets or Jovian Planets) Jupiter Largest planet in the Solar System Has a Great Red Spot from a storm system that is more than larger than Earth. Pressure is so great it would crush a spaceship. Saturn 2nd Largest planet in the Solar System 95 times more massive than earth. Saturn has the largest rings of any planet, the rings are made of icy particles. Most moons of any planet. Uranus Uranus appears blue-green in color. It’s axis of rotation is tilted 90 degrees. Moons are named after Shakespearean plays and formed from other broken moons. Neptune Discovered in 1846 Neptune has visual belts of clouds Interior releases thermal energy to its outer layers. Use to be the 8th planet after Pluto until 1999. Is Pluto still a planet? The International Astronomical Union or IAU downgraded the status of Pluto in to “dwarf planet” because it did not meet the criteria for a full-sized planet. Wra󰈥-󰉉󰈦/5s Comets, Meteors, and Asteroids Lets Watch This How are Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors different from planets? Comets, Asteroids, and Meteoroids METEOR Comets Comets are cosmic snowballs of frozen gases, rock, and dust that orbit the Sun. When a comet's orbit brings it close to the Sun, it heats up and spews dust and gases into a giant glowing head and forms a tail. Asteroids Asteroids are small, rocky objects that orbit the sun. Asteroids are smaller than planets. Some asteroids are found in the orbital path of the planets. Most asteroids are made up of clays, and metals like nickel and iron. Asteroid Belt Most of the asteroids orbit the sun in a ring called “asteroid belt”. It is a belt between Terrestial and Jovial Planets. Asteroid belt is located between the planets Mars and Jupiter. The Kuiper Belt The Kuiper belt is a region of the Solar System that lies beyond the planets and the orbit of Neptune. It is much larger than the asteroid belt. The Kuiper belt contains millions of icy objects including some larger objects like the dwarf planets Pluto and Eris. The Oort Cloud Beyond the Kuiper belt, scientists believe there is another collection of billions of comets called the Oort cloud. This is where long orbit comets come from. The outer limit of the Oort cloud defines the outer boundary of the Solar System. Meteoroids Meteoroids are small piece of rocks or metal that has broken off from comets and asteroids. When meteoroids get pulled on the Earth’s atmosphere by gravity, we call it meteors. Once meteors hit the atmosphere, it will hit up and create a streak of light called “falling star” or “shooting star”. Activity Time: Please prepare your N2 and pencil. Compare and contrast comets, meteors, and asteroids using the venn diagram. Why do we need to learn about Comets, Asteroids, and Meteors?
