Socialization: how we pass information and culture Agencies of socialization: 1) family: the people who initially socialized you into the world. Provide sustenance: things we need to stay alive. A place to practice: an environment to learn social cues. Guide toward societal goals and expectations: how your parents motivate you. Control their behaviour: teaching kids how to behave in society. 2) school : age structured- what you’re learning depends on your age curriculum based: official curriculum: centralized structure. Taught curriculum: a way the teacher delivers the official curriculum. The learned curriculum: what the kid gets out of the curriculum. The tested curriculum: tests in curriculum of what you are supposed to know. Social class based: upper and lower class divisions opportunities of upper class vs. Lower class. Categorization: smart and not smart. Sporty or theater. Art of science. Different class streams. School categories: informal and formal. Formal: AP, A student, GPAs. Informal: grades aren’t written on record but is important, good reader vs bad reader, teachers pet, troublemaker. 3) peer group: a group of people who have something in common. There is a follower and a leader in peer groups. Kids actions can determine their role in a peer group. We learn and practice from the people around us. 4) books, news, social media, radio station. Alter how you see the world: knowledge you don’t see. Media censorship: can bring things out of context.
