Deep muscles of the back&suboccipital region Prof. Dr. Selda Önderoğlu Dept. Of Anatomy Suboccipital Region is the area around the articulation bw.skull-superior end of vertebral coloumn, occipital portion of skull+atlas+axis deep to trapezius and semispinalis capitis m. Greater occipital nerve (dorsal ramus of C2) is Superficially located in this area (cutan.n.) Splenius Capitis m. Semispinalis Capitis m. Trapezius m. These mm. are located superficial to suboccipital region MM. Of the suboccipital region: Rectus Capitis Posterior Minor m. Rectus Capitis Posterior Major m. Obliquus Capitis Superior m. Obliquus Capitis İnferior m. I :is ATLAS(first cervical vertebra) II :is AXIS(second cerv. vertebra) Suboccipital Triangle BOUNDARIES: Superolateral: M.obl.cap.sup Inferolateral: M. Obl.cap.inf. Superomedial: M.rec. Cap. Post. Major Contents: vertebral Artery+ C1 dorsal ramus(suboccipital n.) floor: Post. Arch of Atlas+post. Atlantooccipital membrane Roof: semispininalis Capitis+longissimus capitis Muscles DEEP MUSCLES OF THE BACK These are True mm. Of the back Why? because they act on the movements of vertebral coloumn MM. Of the BACK 1- superficial: trap,lat.dorsi,... 2-intermediate: serr.post sup.& inf. 1+2=extrinsic back mm. 3-deep=intrinsic back mm (these are true back mm.) MM. Of the BACK 1- superficial:trap,lat.dorsi,... 2-intermediate:serr.post sup. And inf. 1+2= extrinsic back mm. 3-deep= intrinsic back mm.(true back mm.) Serratus Posterior Superior m. Serratus Posterior İnferior m. Thoracolumbar (lumbar)fascia: Invests the deep muscles of the back, At lumbar level :Thick and trilaminar, Composed of Anterior-middle-posterior layers Deep (true) mm. of the back: are divided into 3 layers 1-superficial 2-intermediate 3-deep 1: superficial layer: Fibers course from medial to lateral Two muscles: A-Splenius Cervicis m. B-Splenius capitis m. Function: one side:laterally bend and rotate the neck to same side(face turns to the same side) Both sides: Extension of head (capitis) Extension of neck(cervicis) 2- intermediate layer of deep (true)mm of the back (erector spinae m/sacrospinalis m.) Muscle fibers parallel to spinous processes 3 groups; each of them also divided into 3 parts according to its level 1- Iliocostalis lumborum, thoracis, cervici s 2- Longissimus thoracis, cervicis, capitis 3- Spinales thoracis, cervicis, capitis intermediate layer of deep (true)mm of the back (erector spinae m/sacrospinalis m.) 3- Deep layer of deep(true) mm. Of the back (Transversospinales m.) Fibers from lateral to medial 3 groups 1-Semispinalis thoracis, servicis, capitis 2-Multifidus at all levels of vertebral coloumn 3-Rotatores thoracis, servicis, capitis There are also mm. Bw the spinal processes: Interspinales mm -and bw. Transverse processes: Intertransversarii mm Video links https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fLIC952L7Q suboccipital region https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiFmNcKcAl4 deep mm. of the back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFLzjlU7l74 deep mm. of the back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvSWJEz8CRE deep mm. of the back Acknowledgement: I thank you to all the scientists for their efforts of providing and sharing the information/knowledge used in this ppt.
