Ignite Introduction: Courtship and Dating 17 Love is a deep feeling or emotion a person feels for another person. This is a strong feeling of affection conveyed to someone on one’s behalf. The ultimate purpose of these feelings is the depth of understanding and attainment of love. Ever had a feeling of being carried away with your feelings and emotions, a feeling of high whenever you're with someone? This is what you call infatuation or crush. This occurs at the start of any relationship where physical attraction is the center of everything. The desire to have a deeper appreciation and admiration for someone and to get to know a person more is what you call attraction. This usually occurs in the form of infatuation or crush. This is admiration disregarding someone’s flaws and usually lasts for a short time. This is completely normal and a part of being a grown up. Love is among the major basis of any relationship, showing appreciation, deeper affection, and real desire for the person. For a relationship to last, love must be reciprocated. Love develops, nourishes, and handles everything. This is what makes the adult relationship successful. Courtship The period that precedes the engagement and marriage is courtship. This is a continuous process even if two people are married and their relationship is already established. The decision of engagement or such agreement happens during courtship after couples know each other. This can be informal and a private matter, public affair, or a formal arrangement between two people. Courtship through Time Courtship Then... Serenading. Serenading is common in many parts of the country. The man visits the woman’s house and sings romantic songs. The method and terms of serenading varies from different regions. Paninilbihan. This is also common in many parts of the country, wherein the man will do chores such as helping in the farm. fetching water, and preparing firewoods among others. The man is trying to prove to the family of the woman that he can provide a good life to his future family. Pag akyat ng Ligaw. The man formally asks for permission from the parents of the woman if he can court their daughter. Usually during the time of the visit the man will bring gifts not only for the woman but also for the entire family. Love letters. Love letters are done to express someone's affection for the other. Some letters are given secretly or through someone. Other letters are sent via snail mail. Date with chaperone. A woman can go out on a date only if she will be accompanied by a chaperone. A chaperone is usually an older relative like a sister or aunt. Phonepal or Telebabad. Having phone call conversations that will take hours that happen during the wee hours. Courtship Now A suitor can court a woman or a man through the use of cellphones and various online platforms. Courtship is a continuous process that happens on both parties. Development of the feelings such as feeling of belongingness and acceptance usually progress through regular texting and calling that develops into a deeper connection resulting in love. Courtship can be in different platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Skype, and other social networking sites. Showing Affection Whether you are dating or not, there are a lot of healthy ways to show one’s affection that can lead to courtship between persons, of all genders and sexes. Dating The assessment of sustainability for a potential relationship between two people is called dating. This is the enjoyment of an active relationship. Dating happens when two people arrange the time and date of a meeting. This is also a form of courtship that involves social activities done by two or more people as partners in an intimate relationship or as a spouse. This is a mutual agreement set by two or more people to engage in a social activity, together, and as a couple. Factors that Lead to Dating Homogamy (similar or shared traits) Physical proximity Complementary needs Compatible needs Parental image Common Types of Dating: 4. Standard date–This is a type of dating that involves two people. 5. Double date–This type of dating happens when two couples go on a date at the same time and place. 6. Group date – This is a type of dating where any number of couples can enjoy a date. Importance of Dating Formation of affection and respect. Makes the relationship stable. Prioritize quality time for each other. Gives opportunities to know the partner better. Recognizes the strengths and weaknesses of one another and deals with it. Recognize the advantages of dating a variety of people instead than going steady. Don’t hesitate to call your parents if you’re on a date and need help Feel comfortable about staying home when you give or receive gifts in a dating situation. Be clear about your expectation when you give and receive gifts Dating allows the couples to have a deeper understanding of the person they are in a relationship with while having a great time. This reveals any potential problems couples may experience in pursuing a more serious relationship, but it helps develop foundations for marriage. When the relationship becomes stable and strong couples are in a period called going steady. The agreement couples enter in order for them to know their partners and their family well enough to ensure that they are ready for a life-long relationship and companionship is what you call the engagement. This allows opportunities to develop interpersonal skills necessary before marriage. Some cultures practice Pre-arranged marriages and Betrothals in which they were not able to experience courtship and engagement before marriage so the courtship happens once they get married.
