MODULE Subject Code CS 1 Computer Science 1 Module Code 1.0 Introduction to ICT and ICT Systems Lesson Code Time Frame 30 minutes TA ATA Components Tasks (min) (min)b a Target By the end of this learning guide module, the students should be able to: 1. understand ICT and ICT Systems; 1 2. discuss what is ICT and ICT Systems; 3. identify/recognize ICT and ICT Systems. Hook 2 Have you experienced using these technologies shown below? Figure 1:Input and Output ICT (Tewari, Lata, 2019) These are some examples of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Many years ago, most people had little to do with this ICT and ICT Systems, at least directly. Of course, they filled out computerized forms, took computerized tests, and paid computerized bills. But the real work was handled by specialists. Then ICT came along and changed everything. Today it is easy for nearly everybody to use these technologies. Ignite 11 What is ICT? ICT is short for Information & Communications Technology. It covers all forms CS 1 | Page 1 of 5 of Computer and Communications equipment as well as the software used to create, store, transmit, receive, interpret, and manipulate information in various formats like: Voice Conversation Text Pictures Data Motion Pictures or Video Multimedia Presentations Radio and Wireless Broadcast Television Broadcast ICT deals with all systems involved in creating, storing, sending or transmitting, receiving and manipulating these kinds of information. The systems behind ICT include both hardware devices and the software that allow the hardware devices to carry out or to be used for their intended functions. Figure 2: Electronic devices (TALCOM, 2020) What is an ICT System? Basically an ICT system is a set-up consisting of hardware, software, data, and the people who use them. It also includes communication technology such as the internet. Computers are the hardware that is often part of the ICT system. Hardware – The equipment that processes data to create information. It is the physical parts of the system that one can see and touch. Software – A program consists of the step-by-step instructions that tell the CS 1 | Page 2 of 5 computer how to do its work. Also, it is a program that helps create and manipulate information such as text, data, picture or video. Data – The raw, unprocessed facts, including text, numbers, images, and sound. People – The end users. The one who supplies data to the ICT system. The three main types of ICT systems to consider are: 1. Information systems This type of ICT system is focused on managing data and information. Examples of these are a sports club membership system or a supermarket stock system. 2. Control systems These ICT systems mainly control machines. They use input, process and output, but the output may be moving a robot arm to weld a car chassis rather than information. 3. Communications systems The output of these ICT systems is the successful transport of data from one place to another. Example is sending and receiving messages via messenger application. The importance of ICT system are the following: In terms of productivity, it can complete a number of tasks at the same time. It can deal with numerous amounts of information and process them quickly. Can transmit and receive information rapidly. ICT systems are used in a number of environments such as: Offices Shops Factories Aircraft Ships CS 1 | Page 3 of 5 Figure 3:The ICT System (Bitesize, 2020) Navigate 10 Seatwork: A. Give 5 examples of ICT and give a brief description each. B. Among the three (3) main types of ICT systems, choose one (1) and give 5 examples and describe each. Knot In summary, 6 Information and Communications Technology (ICT) are forms of computer and communications equipment as well as software that is used to create, store, transmit, receive, interpret, and manipulate information in its various formats. ICT system is a set-up consisting of hardware, software, data, and the people who use them. It also includes communication technology, such as the internet. Restricted essay: In 15 to 20 sentences, explain how ICT and ICT systems affect the lives of people today? CS 1 | Page 4 of 5 References: 1. O’Leary, T.J. and O’Leary L.I. (2006).
