**UNDERSTADING CULTURE, SOCIETY AND POLITICS GROUP REPORTING DESSIMINATION** **YELLOW- G7** **BLUE- G8** **GREEN- G9** **PURPLE- G10** **RED-G11** **GRAY-G12** **DARK GRAY-13** ### ### HOW SOCIETY IS ORGANIZED? ### According to Influence: - **Primary groups** -- those which are **small but intimate**. Members have direct access and interaction with each other. Emotional bonds are formed between members, and any loss in members affects the identity and structure of the group. **Families** and **close friends** are usually the primary groups that people have. - **Secondary groups** -- those which are formed to perform a specific purpose. Members interact with each other for the accomplishment of the purpose of the group. **Secondary groups are usually formal and impersonal**. Because of the impersonal nature of relationships, any loss or change in membership does not affect the group much. On another note, it is possible for primary groups to form within secondary groups (e.g. becoming best friends with one's seatmate in a class.) ### According to Membership: - Knowing where one belongs and does not belong may also help an individual formulate thoughts and decide what actions to take. - **In-groups** are those groups in which one belongs and those which ***elicit*** (bring out) a sense of loyalty from the individual (e.g. being a part of the women's basketball team allows one to bond with teammates and join pep rallies to support the team.) - **Out-groups** are those groups in which one does not belong and those which **elicit a sense of *antagonism*** (opposing tendency) from the individual (e.g. being part of the women's basketball team gives one a sense of antagonism toward the men's basketball team as the latter gets more funding despite a bad performance during the last season.) ### According to Reference Groups: Page \| 32 - **Reference groups** are those that provide an individual with a set of standards to check against and to know if one is doing well or where he or she needs improvement. For instance, a neophyte scientist considers his superiors as reference group in the same way a budding artist is to seasoned ones. ### According to Networks: - The entirety of social connections an individual takes part in for whatever purpose (economic, political, etc.) and through whatever means (face-to-face interaction, virtual interaction, indirect, etc.). For instance, the politician's link with civil society organizations and NGOs is a good example of a network. ### CULTURAL, SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC INSTITUTIONS ### Kinship, Marriage, and the Household ### Type of Kinships Primary kins: ### Secondary kins: ### Tertiary kins: ### Kinship by Blood Page \| 34 #### ![](media/image4.jpeg)Descent Principles ### Unilineal Descent Page \| 35 ### Cognatic Descent ### Kinship by Marriage Page \| 36 ### Sororal polygyny ### Non-sororal polygyny ### Polyandry ### Rules of Marriage ### Endogamy: Page \| 37 ### Exogamy: ### Forms of exogamy: ### Tribal Marriage ### Types and forms of the family ### Types of family on the basis of marriage - Polygamous or polygynous family - Polyandrous family - Monogamous family - Page \| 38 ### ### Types of family on the basis of the nature of residence - Family of matrilocal residence - Family of patrilocal residence - Family of changing residence ### Types of family on the basis of ancestry or descent family - Matrilineal family - Patrilineal family ### Types of family on the basis of size or structure - Nuclear or the single unit family - Joint family ### Types of family on the basis of the nature of relations - The conjugal family which consists of adult members among there exists sex relationship. - Consanguine family which consists of members among whom there exists blood relationship- brother and sister, father and son etc. ### Main characteristics of family ### Politics of Kinship Page \| 39
