-Made up of 206 individual bones - Connected together through articulations , ligaments and tendons Skeletal system ** Long bones include the clavicles, humeri, radii, ulnae, metacarpals, femurs, tibiae, fibulae, metatarsals, and phalanges. **Short bones include the carpal and tarsal bones, patellae, and sesamoid bones. **Flat bones include the skull, mandible, scapulae, sternum, and ribs. **Irregular bones include the vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, and hyoid bone. The four general categories of bones are long bones, short bones, flat bones, and irregular bones. Skeletal system can be divided into two main parts: Axial and Appendicular skeleton Axial Skeleton : composed mainly of : skull and trunk I)Skull: *neurocranium *viscerocranium II)Trunk : *Vertebral column *Rib cage *Sternum Appendicular skeleton: 1) Shoulder girdle 2) Bones of upper limb 3) Pelvic girdle 4) Bones of lower limb Skull : 1)neurocranium Houses and protects the brain frontal_parietal_temporal_occipi tal 2) Viscerocranium maxilla and mandibles Sternum_cartila ge and 12 pairs of ribs (10+2floating) Vertebral column :houses and protects spinal cord 7 cervical 12 thoracic 5 lumbar 5 fused Sacrum 4 fused coccyx Attached to the axial skeleton I) Upperbones: formed of : pectoral girdle ( clavicle and scapula) Bones of the arm:Humerus- Elbow joint- Appendicular Radius&Ulna Wrest bones: carpals-metacarpals-phalanges skeletone II) Lower bones:formed of : Pelvic girdle: pelvis- pubic symphasis Bones of the leg: Femur-patella (knee cap) tibia- fibula- ankle joint Bones of the foot: calcaneus (heel bone)- tarsals- metatarsals- phalanges Appendicular skeletone Upper bone Lower bone Thank you
