    Study Notes

    Skeletal System Overview

    • Composed of 206 individual bones
    • Connected by articulations, ligaments, and tendons

    Types of Bones

    • Long bones: Clavicle, humerus, radius, ulna, metacarpals, femurs, tibia, fibula, metatarsals, phalanges
    • Short bones: Carpal and tarsal bones, patellae, sesamoid bones
    • Flat bones: Skull, mandible, scapulae, sternum, ribs
    • Irregular bones: Vertebrae, sacrum, coccyx, hyoid bone

    Axial Skeleton

    • Primarily composed of the skull and trunk
      • Skull:
        • Neurocranium: Houses and protects the brain
        • Viscerocranium: Maxilla and mandibles
      • Trunk:
        • Vertebral column: Protects spinal cord (7 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 fused sacrum, 4 fused coccyx)
        • Rib cage: Sternum and 12 pairs of ribs (10 true, 2 floating)

    Appendicular Skeleton

    • Attached to the axial skeleton
      • Upper bones:
        • Pectoral girdle (clavicle and scapula)
        • Bones of the upper limb (humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges)
      • Lower bones:
        • Pelvic girdle (pelvis)
        • Bones of the lower limb (femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges)
