Train Operators may resume normal speed when they pass the green light or flag. 7 Adjacent Track Flagging Immediately reduce the speed of the train to no more than 10 MPH. Sound 2 long blasts of the train horn. Operate with Restricted Speed and Extreme Caution. Be prepared to stop within ½ range of vision. Expect to find personnel or equipment on the adjacent track. Sound a series of short blasts of the horn every 75-120 feet until the green resume signal is passed. 8 Flagging within Yard Limits Immediately reduce the speed of the train to no more than 10 mph. Sound 2 long blasts of the train horn. Operate with Restricted Speed and Extreme Caution. Be prepared to stop within ½ range of vision. Expect to find equipment or personnel working within yard limits. 9 10 RADIO CODES Fixed Automatic Signal Displaying a Green aspect Proceed at the allowable speed, expecting the next signal to be clear. 12 Fixed Automatic Signal Displaying a Yellow aspect Proceed with caution. Be prepared to stop at the next signal. 13 Fixed Automatic Signal Displaying a Red aspect Stop 15 feet short of the signal or at the yellow Insulated Joint (IJ) marker on the third rail protection board. Call OCC immediately. 14 Fixed Automatic Signal Displaying a Red aspect STOP 15 feet short of the signal or at the yellow insulated joint (IJ) marker on the third rail protection board. Call OCC immediately. With permission, slowly proceed up to the signal and bridge the IJ with the first set of wheels and STOP. Observe that the Stop Arm goes down and stays down. Proceed with Restricted Speed and Extreme Caution to the next signal. Be prepared to stop within ½ range of vision, expecting to find track occupied, a broken rail, or other obstruction in the block. 15 Fixed Automatic Signal Displaying a Red aspect with an “AK” Authorized Key-By sign attached STOP 15 feet short of the signal or at the yellow Insulated Joint marker on the third rail protection board. Slowly proceed up to the signal, bridge the Insulated Joint with the first set of wheels, and STOP. Watch the stop arm go down and stay down. Proceed with Restricted Speed and Extreme Caution to the next signal. Be prepared to stop within ½ range of vision, expecting to find the track occupied, a broken rail, or other obstruction in the block. 16 Fixed Automatic Signal Displaying a Red aspect with a “No Key-By” sign attached STOP 15 feet short of the signal or at the yellow Insulated Joint marker on the third rail protection board. Call OCC immediately. With permission, slowly proceed up to the signal, bridge the Insulated Joint with the first set of wheels, and STOP. Secure the train and descend to the trackway. Manually drive down the stop arm and make sure it stays down. Reboard and unsecure the train. Proceed with Restricted Speed and Extreme Caution to the next signal. Be prepared to stop within ½ range of vision, expecting to find the track occupied, a broken rail, or other obstruction in the block. 17 Fixed Miscellaneous No Key By Sign Indicates the automatic key-by feature on an Automatic Signal has been deactivated. 18 Fixed Miscellaneous Reverse No Key By Sign If movement against the normal direction of traffic is required (reverse moves) on a track that is not signaled in both directions, the deactivated key by feature on automatic signals will prevent the stop arm from driving down as the train approaches. Train Operators must stop at the Reverse No Key By sign and contact the OCC for instructions. 19 Fixed Automatic Signal. Displaying a Red aspect with a Red Circle “K” sign attached STOP 15 feet short of the signal. Call OCC immediately. With permission, slowly proceed up to the signal and STOP. Operate the automatic stop arm manual release lever or button. Watch the stop arm go down and stay down. Proceed with Restricted Speed and Extreme Caution to the next signal. Be prepared to stop within ½ range of vision, expecting to find the track occupied, a broken rail, or other obstruction in the block. 20 Fixed Miscellaneous Blind Automatic Stop Arm Sign Identifies the location of a blind automatic stop arm. 21 Fixed Interlocking Standard Home Signal Displaying a Green over Green aspect Proceed at the allowable speed, expecting the next signal to be clear on the main route. 22 Fixed Interlocking Standard Home Signal Displaying a Yellow over Green aspect Proceed with caution. Press the “Release” pushbutton on the Route Request Box. The signal aspect will change to a solid Red over solid Red. Train Operators can then select their route, if necessary. The “Release” pushbutton may also be used to cancel a route, if necessary. 28 Fixed Interlocking Standard Home Signal Displaying a Flashing Green aspect A Signal that flashes Green indicates that the signal is overridden by CBTC and requires that the train operation be governed in accordance with the CBTC Train Operator Display. An aspect, affixed to select Lunar White Signals, bearing illuminated numbers (white LEDs) that will count down to zero when grade time is in effect and a train enters the signal block. Used to permit a train to close in on a preceding train standing in or moving out of a station. 59 Fixed Automatic Signal Displaying a Red aspect with an illuminated “20” (on Station Time) Approach at the allowable speed indicated by the illuminated number, expecting this signal to clear. 20 denotes MPH. Used to permit a train to close in on a preceding train standing in or moving out of a station. 60 Fixed Interlocking Standard Home Signal Displaying a Red over Red aspect with an illuminated “20” (on Station Time) Approach at the allowable speed indicated by the illuminated number, expecting this signal to clear. 20 denotes MPH. Used to permit a train to close in on a preceding train standing in or moving out of a station. 61 Fixed Miscellaneous – Diverging Route Speed Sign Indicates the allowable speed on a diverging route, when such speed is greater or less than 10 MPH and when a bottom Yellow aspect is displayed on a Home Signal in approach to a switch. 15 denotes MPH. 62 Fixed Miscellaneous – Speed Limit Sign Located at the entrance to a section of track on which trains are required to run at a reduced speed. Number denotes MPH. 63 Fixed Miscellaneous – Resume Speed Sign Located at the point where a train of indicated length which has been running at a reduced speed may resume normal speed. 10 denotes number of cars. For R46 and R68 equipment, 8 car trains will resume at the 10- car sign. 64 Fixed Miscellaneous – Resume Speed Sign Located at the point where trains of all lengths, which were running at a reduced speed, may resume normal speed. 65 Fixed Miscellaneous – Reverse Movement Car Stop Sign Located in, or just beyond, an interlocking to indicate where a train of indicated length must stop to clear proper SWITCHES and SIGNALS for a movement in the opposite direction to that in which the train had been traveling. The number denotes the number of cars For R46 and R68 equipment, 8-car trains will utilize the 10-car sign. 66 Fixed Miscellaneous – Station Car Stop Sign Located within station limits, to indicate the position at which trains of specific car lengths must stop. Number denotes the number of cars. For R46 and R68 equipment, 8 car trains will stop at the 10-car sign. 67 Fixed Miscellaneous – Station Car Stop Sign with Diagonal Yellow Stripes Located within station limits to indicate the positions at which trains of specific car lengths must stop. The number denotes number of cars. Train operators must not move the train until the signal at the leaving end is a proceed signal. (Yellow or green) For R46 and R68 equipment, 8 car trains will stop at the 10-car sign. 68 Fixed Miscellaneous – Station Car Stop Sign Located within station limits to indicate the position where trains of all lengths must stop. 69 Fixed Miscellaneous – Full Height Station Car Stop Sign Located within station limits to indicate the position at which trains of all lengths must stop, to make a precise stop. When the train comes to a complete stop, the car stop marker lines up with the front corner post of the operating car. 70 Fixed Miscellaneous - J/Z Skip Stop Signs Installed in skip stop areas of the Broadway/Jamaica (J/Z) line to alert Train Operators of train stopping patterns. Installed prior to entering, and also within each station, indicate which train is to make a station stop. 71 Fixed Miscellaneous – OPTO Station Car Stop sign Located within station platform limits to indicate the position at which the first car of the train in OPTO service must stop regardless of train length. 72 Fixed Miscellaneous – Radio Frequency Sign Located near station car stop signs and conductor indication boards to indicate a radio frequency changeover point. 73 Fixed Miscellaneous – Stop Sign Located at the entrance to maintenance facilities, at crosswalks in yards, and in certain other areas. Train Operators must stop the train and then proceed in accordance with special instructions. 74 Fixed Miscellaneous – Lay Up Car Stop Sign Indicates the position at which designated trains are to be stored. Number denotes position. 75 Fixed Miscellaneous – Employee Loading Platform Sign Designates where a train must stop, when signaled to do so, in order for the first door of the first car of the train to be abreast of the employee platform. 76 Fixed Miscellaneous - Station Platform Telephone T Sign Located in a station to indicate the location of a system telephone. 77 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Wheel Detector (WD Start Lighted Steadily) Entering Wheel Detector Area. Adjust speed and expect a diverging route. 78 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Wheel Detector (WD Middle Lighted Steadily) Complying with previously posted speed. Adjust to posted speed. 79 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Wheel Detectors (WD Middle Flashing) Adjust to posted speed; Light will stop flashing and illuminate steadily, when the train operator complies with previously posted speed. 80 Fixed Miscellaneous – WD End Sign Indicates that a maximum length train has cleared a wheel detector area and permissible speed for the track section may be resumed unless otherwise restricted. 81 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Train Order Signal Located near the entrance to under river tunnels or bridges, at stations where gap fillers are in operation, and at certain other locations. 2 horizontal red lights indicates stop and stay. Call the OCC by radio or telephone for instructions. 2 horizontal white lights indicates to proceed without orders in accordance with related fixed signals. Note: The stop arms associated with these signals can be placed to the tripping position even after the train has passed the signal. 82 Fixed Miscellaneous Light - Gap Filler Signal Located a short distance beyond the 10-Car Station Car Stop Sign at gap filler stations. It displays a red aspect when the gap fillers are extended or not sufficiently withdrawn to clear the sides of cars. Stop and stay. After receiving train Operator’s indication, proceed slowly untill the Gap Filler Signal clears. When the gap fillers are sufficiently withdrawn, the red aspect is replaced by an illuminated sign with the letters “GF” and the track designation. Train operators shall be directed by posted signs. 83 Fixed Miscellaneous Sign - Gap Filler Sign Located near the 10-Car Station Car Stop Sign. Train operators must proceed slowly until the gap filler signal clears. 84 Fixed Miscellaneous Light - Gap Filler Indication Signal Used in connection with gap fillers located on station platforms at the operating positions of conductors and train operators of various lengths to indicate, when illuminated, the number of cars the doors of which may be safely opened. Number denotes number of cars. 85 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Repeater Signal Identified by the letters REP on the signal number plate. Used to show the aspect of its associated signal, which is positioned around a curve. Is in full view of the Train Operator and in most cases is on the opposite side of the Train Operator’s position. There is no automatic stop arm associated with this signal 86 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Bumper Light Defines the limits of train movement at the end of a track. Absolute Stop And Stay.87 Fixed Miscellaneous Light - Fixed Trip Stop Marker Sign At certain bumper block locations, the associated fixed trip is located at a greater distance in approach to the bumper light. The fixed trip stop marker sign is placed adjacent to the fixed trip to indicate the position where the train must stop before the bumper. 88 Fixed Miscellaneous – End of Signal Control Sign Located at the end of signal control system to indicate that operations will be governed by RESTRICTED SPEED AND EXTREME CAUTION unless otherwise indicated. 89 Fixed Miscellaneous – Fouling Point Sign Defines the clearing point at HAND OPERATED switches. Cars or other equipment must not pass on the connecting track while cars occupy any portion of the track between the Fouling Point Sign and the switch. The train operator placing equipment on said track must observe if any part of the train is beyond the Fouling Point Sign. If this condition is observed, the train operator must immediately notify the dispatcher after securing the train. 90 Fixed Miscellaneous Light - Switch Target Indicates the location of a hand throw switch or derailer. 91 Fixed Miscellaneous – Shop Door Clearance Sign Defines the shop door open clearance point. Cars or other equipment must not attempt to pass through the doorway until the bottom edge of the door has been raised above the clearance sign. 92 Fixed Miscellaneous - Route Display Sign Located at the end of the platform near the station car stop sign or along the right of way to alert the train operator of the home signal aspect that he/she must look for to stay on the appropriate route. 93 Fixed Miscellaneous Light - Train Identification / Route Request Button Used in conjunction with certain home signals to permit train operators to identify their trains or to make route requests to the tower operator. 94 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Ready to Proceed Button Used in conjunction with certain home signals to permit train operators to indicate to tower operators that their trains are ready to proceed from yard tracks, spur tracks, or relay tracks. 95 Fixed Miscellaneous – Reverse Running Sign Located at the entrance to a section of track on which trains are allowed to proceed in the reverse direction (against the normal direction of traffic) under an authorized move. It indicates the maximum speed which trains may be operated on said section of track. 96 Fixed Miscellaneous – Temporary Reduced Speed Order Sign Located 300 feet from the entrance to a section of track where it is necessary to temporarily restrict the speed of trains. Number denotes mph 97 Fixed Miscellaneous – Temporary Reduced Speed Grade Time “GT” Signal Used in grade time controlled areas where track maintenance or other conditions exist that make it necessary to temporarily reduce the speed of trains below the permanently posted Grade Time “GT” Sign for the area. Number denotes the MPH 98 Fixed Miscellaneous – Temporary Reduced Speed Diverging Grade Time “DGT” Signal Used in grade time controlled areas where track maintenance or other conditions exist that make it necessary to temporarily reduce the speed of trains below the permanently posted Diverging Grade Time “DGT” Sign for the area. Used in approach to a diverging route. Number denotes MPH 99 Fixed miscellaneous - Temporary Reduced Speed Order Resume Signal Indicates the end of the Temporary Reduced Speed Area and will be displayed at 620 feet beyond the reduced speed section of track. If a Temporary Reduced Speed Order Resume Signal is not observed, Train Operators will continue to operate at the reduced speed to the leaving end of the second station, express or local notify the OCC. 100 101 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Slow Speed Ahead Signal 3 yellow lights, 3 yellow flags, or a Slow Speed Ahead Board with 3 yellow reflectors must be displayed at a point 500-700 feet from the Slow Speed Order Signal. Train Operators upon passing this signal must begin to adjust the speed of their train, expecting to find a Slow Speed Order Signal. Train Operators must reduce their speed such that they pass the Slow Speed Order Signal at not more than 10 miles per hour. 102 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Slow Speed Order Signal 5 yellow lights, five yellow flags, or a Slow Speed Order Board with 5 yellow reflectors must be displayed at a point 150 feet in approach to the section of track over which it is necessary to reduce the speed of trains to 10 mph or less. Train Operators must not pass this signal at speeds exceeding 10 miles per hour or as indicated and must not resume normal speed until they pass the Slow Speed Order Resume Speed Signal. Train Operators must sound 2 long blasts of the horn when passing a Slow Speed Order Signal. 103 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Slow Speed Order Diverging Route Signal 5 yellow lights, five yellow flags, or a Slow Speed Order Diverging Route Board with 5 yellow reflectors Must be displayed at a point 150 feet in approach to the section of track over which it is necessary to reduce the speed of trains to 10 mph or less. Should train operation be from a diverging route into the Slow Speed Order Area the board must have a “D 10 miles” speed limit sign affixed. Train Operators must not pass this signal at speeds exceeding 10 miles per hour or as indicated and must not resume normal speed until they pass the Slow Speed Order Resume Speed Signal. Train Operators must sound 2 long blasts of the horn when passing a Slow Speed Order Signal. 104 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Slow Speed Order Resume Speed Signal 1 green light, 1 green flag, or a Slow Speed Order Resume Speed Board with 5 green reflectors must be displayed 620 feet beyond the farthest point of the Slow Speed Order area. Train Operators may resume normal speed when their train reaches the Slow Speed Order Resume Speed Signal. 105 Moveable Miscellaneous Light Signal – Bank of Lights Train Operators must sound their train horn or whistle whenever they observe banks of lights along the track, whether or not workers are visible. 106 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Train Starting Signal Consists of illuminated green lights and bells used at terminal stations to indicate to Conductors when to close the train doors. 107 Fixed Miscellaneous Light – Train Holding Signal Consists of illuminated amber lights used at intermediate stations to indicate to Conductors when to keep train doors open. Any intermediate station designated as a terminal will use the Train Holding Signal as a Train Starting Signal. 108 Fixed Miscellaneous – Conductor’s Indication Board Located with in station limits, which indicates to the conductor of a maximum length train that all of the trains side doors are abreast of the station platform. 109 Fixed Miscellaneous – No Clearance Sign Located on or along the trackway to indicate an area where there is insufficient space between the sides of cars and structures next to the trackway to permit a person to safely pass or stand. 110 Fixed Miscellaneous – Alternate Position Sign Indicates the location of the only approved alternate Conductor’s operating position for full length trains. 111 Fixed Miscellaneous – Wrong Side Do Not Open Sign Indicates that the Conductor must not open on this side unless directed by proper authority. 112 Fixed Miscellaneous Sign-Security Zone Sign The Emergency Exit Alarm Desk (EEAD) Or OCC Must Be Notified If Someone Wants To Gain Access To An Area Where This Sign Is Present. 113 Fixed Miscellaneous Sign - Railroad Crossing Sign Located at railroad-vehicular roadway crossings In yards to denote the presence of crossing and convey information as to the number of tracks to be crossed. Operators of roadway vehicles must stop, look, and listen, then proceed when the way is clear. 114
