Ways STDs are Transmitted ❏ Engaging in both unprotected and protected sex ❏ Being sexually active with more than one person ❏ Selecting high-risk partners ❏ Sharing needles ❏ Mother to baby Human Papillomavirus ❏ Asymptomatic- no visible symptoms. A Pap test and other medical examinations may detect changes associated with HPV. ❏ Linked with cervical cancers, and can cause cancers of the penis and anus ❏ NO TREATMENT AVAILABLE Genital Warts ❏ Pink or reddish warts with cauliflower like tops that appear on male or female genitals, the vagina, or the cervix one to three months after infection from HPV ❏ Result in penis/cervical cancer ❏ Affect infants, obstructing airways potentially causing death. Genital Herpes ❏ Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) passed on through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. ❏ Caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Types: 1. Causes cold sores 2. Causes genital sores Chlamydia Bacterial infection that affects the reproductive systems ○ Can lead to infertility ○ Can lead to pregnancy difficulties Diagnosed by examination of secretions in the cervix for females and urethra for males Gonorrhea ❖ A bacterial STD that usually affects mucous membranes Can lead to infertility. Can spread throughout the bloodstream causing permanent damage to the joints ❖ Treatment: Antibiotics Trichomoniasis An STD caused by a microscopic protozoan that results in infections of the vagina, urethra, and bladder. May result in vaginitis, an inflammation of the vagina characterized by discharge, odor, irritation, and itching. Trichomoniasis Syphilis An STD that attacks many parts of the body and is caused by a small bacteria called a spirochete. Can damage internal organs, including the heart, liver, nervous system, and kidneys. If left untreated, the person is at risk of paralysis, convulsions, blindness, and heart disease. AIDS Auto Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease that weakens a person’s immune system Stages of Infection 1. Acute HIV Infection Stage: Common symptoms such as fever, rash, headache, body aches, and swollen glands. These are commonly mistaken for other viral infections. (1 week - 1 month) 2. Asymptomatic Stage: No Symptoms show. (6 months - 10 years+) Final Stage Symptomatic Stage: Person has a severe decrease in immune cells This is the last stage and worse (obviously) The body becomes susceptible to opportunistic infections: infections that occur in individuals who don’t have a healthy immune system Detecting HIV EIA Test:Screens for the presence of HIV antibodies in the blood. Western Blot: Most common test. If done properly, it has a 100% accuracy. Prevention Try practicing abstinence: The deliberate decision to avoid harmful behaviors, including sexual activity before marriage and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. Choose friends who are abstinent (and support your decision to abstain.) Prevention Without Abstinence Getting vaccinated before having a relationship with your Boy/Girl friend Do not have a relationship with more than one person Have routine check-ups for STIs Continuation Use contraception things such as condoms or dental dams Don’t use alcohol and other drugs THE BEST WAY TO AVOID AN STD IS DO NOT HAVE SEX Consequences of STDs Incurable: The viruses remain in the body for life that cause genital herpes and AIDS. There are no antibodies that can cure some STIS. Cancer: The hepatitis B virus can cause cancer of the liver. The human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cancer of the cervix. Continuation Reproduction - Females can develop pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which damages reproductive organs and can cause sterility. Contagion - Premature births can result, and infants infected with STDs. May become blind or develop pneumonia and some may die. STD Statistics Pandemic: a global outbreak of infectious disease End of 2002, 40 million people worldwide were infected with HIV In 2023, 1.3 million people were infected with HIV Continuation One in five adults in the U.S. have an STI 1 million curable STIs are acquired everyday worldwide More than 500 million people aged 15-49 are estimated to be infected by the herpes simplex virus Summary Be careful! STDs will affect every aspect of your lives. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?
